Jacques Marie Emile Lacan was a French psychoanalyst and psychiatrist who was born in the early twentieth century. Understanding Lacanian Psychoanalysis And Its Concepts

Lacanian psychoanalysis is the theories of human thoughts and behaviors as they apply to psychology and psychoanalysis. These theories were introduced by Jacques Lacan, a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist. Lacan worked on his theories throughout his adult life, but he was not considered a real contributor to the community until the 1950s. Lacan’s theories were based on a few major concepts, although there is a bit more to it all.

The first concept of Lacan’s theory was deemed the return to Freud in 1951. It was during this year that Lacan held regular weekly seminars that focused on Sigmund Freud’s theories if linguistics and philosophy as they apply to psychological aspects. At one point after his seminars began, Lacan published a report entitled The Function and Field of Speech and Language in Psychoanalysis which introduced his theories. The return to Freud concept emphasized Lacan’s belief that Freudian slips and dream interpretations proved that the unconscious is complex and structurally comparable to a language. The biggest consequence is that the subconscious cannot revert to a previous state when exposed to trauma.

The second concept is what Lacan called the mirror stage. The introduction of this theory became Lacan’s first official psychoanalytic contribution. This concept details Lacan’s theory that the ego is formed through objectification. The ego is the result of a person’s conflict between perceived appearance and emotional experiences. It is named the mirror stage because of Lacan’s descriptions that involve using mirrors for infants to gain self-recognition.

Lacan’s third concept is what he named as Other. In this concept, there are two parts: A and a. The big Other (A), is what Lacan called the radical alterity, which means it can’t be combined with identifying anything. The little other (a), is the direct projection and reflected image of a person’s ego.

The final concept of Lacan’s theories involves three orders. The Imaginary is the order used to theorize deception, images, and imagination. The Symbolic order is a linguistic dimension and structures the Imaginary order. The Real order is the opposite of the Imaginary and has a traumatic quality as the object of anxiety.

While Lacanian psychoanalysis uses the same fundamentals as Freud’s theories, there are many aspects that have be pulled from other theorists. Much of Lacan’s whole theory is based on the a person’s inability to reach self-reflection. Moreover, Lacan also believed that social aspects could not be conjoined with psychoanalysis; the two were different.
