Muhammad Ali – The Boxing Legend of the 19th Century

Muhammad Ali was 70 on January 17th, 2012. He was the most feared opponent in the boxing ring in his long and active career and with very good reason. He won the world heavy weight boxing championship three times after winning a gold medal at the Olympics and was named sportsman of the century by the BBC and Sports Illustrated.

Muhammad Ali was born in Louisville, Kentucky on January 17th, 1942 and was christened after his father Cassius Marcellus Clay. They added the handle Junior, to distinguish him from his father who was a billboard painter. In 1967, Cassius changed his name to Muhammad Ali and became a Muslim.

A local white Louisville police officer named Joe E. Martin was the first person to see that the young Clay had something extraordinary when he watched him fighting over a stolen bicycle as a twelve tear old. Martin encouraged Clay to go to the boxing ring with him. Martin and Clay trained together at Stoner’s Gym.

Martin and Ali used to do a show together called ‘Tomorrow’s Champions’. Stone was a useful coach for Ali and he remained his tutor for nearly all his amateur career (the last four years he was with Chuck Bodak).

As an amateur Ali won six Kentucky Golden Gloves, two National Golden Gloves, an Amateur Athletic Union title and the Gold Medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics for light-heavyweight boxing.

His record as an amateur was 100 wins and five losses. Ali was both hero-worshipped and vilified in his mother country. After Ali changed his name he refused to recognize the name Clay, saying that his family had been given it by slave-owners.

He was also accused of switching his religion to dodge the draft, but his well-known reply to that allegation was: “I ain’t got no quarrel with them Viet Cong… No Viet Cong ever called me nigger”. In 1966 he was barred from fighting in the United States. Ali was stripped of his boxing titles and his boxing license was suspended. So he fought abroad, frequently in the United Kingdom.

Ali’s first title fight was against Sonny Liston on February 25 1964, but it was nearly cancelled, because it became known that Ali had joined Malcolm X’s Nation of Islam. The promoter, Bill Faversham. was worried that that might spoil the attendance figures, because Ali was not considered likely to win anyway (7:1 against).

Ali agreed not to confirm that he had associations with Malcolm X until after the fight and it went ahead. At the weigh in, Ali’s pulse was 120 as opposed to his norm of 54 and his opponent’s team misinterpretted this as nerves. This was the time that Ali, the Louisville Lip, first said that he was going to “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”.

Ali saw his first professional defeat in 1971 against Joe Frazier, although he won the title back from George Foreman in 1974. This was the well-known ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ which was given political overtones.

It was ranked seventh in ‘The 100 Greatest Sporting Moments’. Ali’s fight against Chuck Wepner in 1975 motivated the film ‘Rocky’, which won the Academy Award.

Ali announced his retirement on June 27th 1979, but staged a comeback 18 months later in October 1980. He eventually retired in 1981, but before that the councillors of Louisville renamed Walnut Street ‘Muhammad Ali Boulevard’. A dozen of the seventy street signs were stolen within a week.

In 1984, Ali was diagnosed as having Altzeimer’s, which people who have head trauma are more prone to. Despite his illness, Ali has worked tirelessly for peace and equality and has represented America at several international peace negotiations.

He has won more prizes than anyone can possibly remember and established a $60 million not for profit centre in Louisville which houses his awards, but is there to promote peace, social responsibility, respect and personal growth.

On average, Ali travels over 200 days a year to raise money for and consciousness of poverty and hunger. It has been determined that he has helped supply more than 22,000,000 meals.

Angelo Dundee, Ali’s cornerman and trainer from 1960-1981 passed away on February 1st 2012 at the age of 90,

What You Can Do To Come To The Aid Of Liberia

Many have never heard of Liberia let alone think about it at any time in our busy lives. Liberia is a small country in West Africa.

Liberia is one of the world’s poorest nations. The country, nonetheless, has a rich history and an abundance of human resources inspiring charity groups from every continent to take part in their impoverished country. You need to learn more about Liberia’s people and what you can do to help them.

The Liberian Environment

Liberia lies on the west coast of Africa, bordering Sierra Leone, Guinea and Cote d’Ivoire. It is home to 40% of whatever remains of the upper Guinean rainforest. Liberia’s climate is either blisteringly hot as it lies on the equator, or deluged with rain between May and October. Dry days throughout those months are rare indeed.

Next time you make negative comments on the weather in your area, remember Liberia’s climate and count your blessings.

Before the first civil war, agriculture was the mainstay of the Liberian family. The country’s farmers raised and traded rice, cassava and sugar cane. The leached out soil in Liberia is better adapted to tree-crop rather than field-crop agriculture, however. It produces goods such as coffee, palm oil, palm kernels, bananas, plantains and cocoa along with other miscellaneous fruits and vegetables.

Americans may know it as the home to the Harbel plantation, once belonging to Firestone and since 1988, Bridgestone. No matter who owns it, Harbel is the largest rubber plantation in the world.

Liberia’s Economy

Liberia’s history can be separated into pre-war and post-war eras. Here is where you need to start to understand what the country is all about. The First Liberian Civil War raged from 1989 to 1996 killing over 200,000 people. The Second Liberian Civil War took place between 1999 and 2003. This war ruined the economy by forcing the businesspeople to flee the country. While there is no war going on right now, these business owners and their businesses will never return.

As mentioned earlier, Liberia is one of the most impoverished countries in the world. The unemployment rate is 85%, which may or may not include those people living on rural subsistence farms. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has attempted to encourage private investment in the country by lifting embargoes on timber and diamond exports. The country is struggling nonetheless and is desperately trying to rebuild their wrecked infrastructure.

It’s interesting to note that while it’s not information widely available, one source suggests that iron mining once accounted for more than half of Liberia’s export earnings. This is unconfirmed, but worth mentioning in a discussion of the Liberian economic climate.

How You Can Assist Liberia

It is no secret that Liberia relies heavily on foreign aid and international cooperation. If you are interested in doing what you can to help Liberia’s people, contact one of the many charitable associations currently working within the country. I assure you, you and your resources will instantly be put to very good use.

Swimwear Jumbles

If you are into charity work, then you will understand how hard it is to come up with new ideas for helping people or collecting money, especially if you are on ‘the committee’.

Not everybody agrees with charity work, imagining that governments should take on the function of charity worker, but no one can deny that governments are not doing enough, so people and charitable associations have to step in.

As a supporter or as a charity worker, you naturally have the right to choose whom you support. A hundred years ago, middle class charity workers tried to help the local poor; then after the Second World War, charities started searching further afield and Africa and other places became the focus of their aid.

These days, the cycle has turned full circle for many of people and they are beginning to look to the local underprivileged again. The old expression that ‘Charity Begins At Home’ appears to be ringing true with people again. So what can you do to assist the local underprivileged?

The YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids, USA, has come up with a fresh concept. They discovered that numerous individuals bought at least one swimming costume every year. Those individuals might keep them until the next year, if they particularly liked them, but they would still buy a new swimming suit every year.

The thing is, that people hang onto their old swimming costumes until one day, they find them at the back of the draw and it occurs to them to toss them out. Sometimes, for ladies, the top half will break – a strap or the clasp – and they are left with a pair of bottoms. Men are inclined to hang onto their bathers for years.

At the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids, they decided to begin a campaign to collect all the old swimming costumes, jumble them all up and invite parents and kids in to choose a ‘new’ swimming costume.

A lot of the kids that turned up, particularly the girls, had never had a swimming costume before – they had always worn cut down jeans and a t-shirt.

Now, there are several ways you could go about this, when you have collected your boxes of swimming costumes. You can try to create sets for girls – tops and bottoms that match – or you could merely throw them all together and let individuals have the fun of making up a two article swimming suit.

If you are trying to raise money for something like school books or a new church roof, then you could make a fixed price per swim suit. However, if you are attempting to attract adults or kids to your establishment – say a Sunday School or a local community centre – you could place a promotional leaflet in with every costume as it is bagged.

You could also have volunteers standing around willing to give fashion advice or you could sell tea or coffee and homemade cakes. Whichever way you look at it, this is a really clever notion for helping people get an affordable/free swimming costume and get your concept across.

How About Recycling Old Computers?

Many progressive towns and cities are either already recycling or are thinking of recycling old computers. Numerous municipalities already do this with television sets, but not so many do it for computers.

There are quite a few reusable parts in a computer when you think of it, but most owners simply throw their old computers away when they stop working or become ‘too slow’.

Then they go out and purchase a new one which has exactly the same DVD player as they just put in the bin. That goes for the internet card, the hard drive and the modem and other bits and pieces as well, I am certain. There may even be noxious substances in the chips that could contaminate the soil at the landfill site.

It will almost certainly become normal practice in the not too distant future to recycle computers and other items of electronic apparatus. In fact there are already some places that willingly accept ‘old’ computers, although there are not many that recycle the components out of broken ones.

Some churches and most charity shops will take working computers to redistribute (or sell) to children, whose parents cannot afford to buy them or to be sent to Third World countries, where there is a dire need for computer hardware so that children are not left behind in the technological advances being made in communication and workplace apparatus.

However, there do not seem to be enough people cannibalizing old computers to make ones that work. After all, any computer is better than no computer at all and it does not take an advanced machine to go on the Internet, particularly if you do not insist on running Windows 7. Older versions of Windows are more that capable or running Internet software. We used them for years, didn’t we?

Monitors and printers are also reusable or even recyclable, although these things are not usually thrown out as frequently as computers. Monitors can be taken care of in the same fashion as televisions, anyway it is always handy to have a standby monitor.

Ink cartridges ought to be refilled rather than replaced. All you need is a bottle of the correct sort of ink. Indian ink will do for the black cartridge which is the one most users change the most frequently.

Take a syringe with a needle, suck up a couple of millilitres and squirt it through the hole in the side – NOT through the hole in the bottom, or you will damage the cartridge. This hole is normally concealed with sticky tape or a label, but it is easy to find if you are searching for it. you can refill cartridges a dozen or more times, before they are clogged and that can save hundreds of dollars (here a black cartridge costs $10-15).

Colour cartridges are refillable in the same way and you should be able to get hold of the three inks necessary for colour printing at a printers. Colour cartridges are even more costly to replace. Another advantage of refilling yourself is that you will not run out of ink halfway through a print job.

Church Fund Raisers: A Few Ideas

All buildings need maintenance and this includes churches. In the past, it was not so much of a problem as it is today, because the congregations were larger, so if everybody chipped in, the maintenance could be done.

These days, the congregations are smaller,so donations have to be higher. The price of maintenance has also gone up substantially. One of the main methods of topping up the maintenance fund is by fund raising, which involves holding fund-raising events.

It seems that each charitable organization is having the same difficulty, because in an average sized town, there are frequently a dozen fund-raising events every Saturday and Sunday. There are church fund-raisers, scout and youth club fund-raisers, school, YMCA and Women’s Institute fund raisers all battling to be the prime event of the weekend.

This amount of competition makes it difficult to choose which type of event to hold. In this piece, we will take a look at some of the most popular kinds of fund-raising events – maybe the kinds of events that will raise the most money for your charity’s building or your favourite good cause.

You could distribute catalogue order books. Some catalogue order books are non profit-making, which means that the catalogue company does not make a profit so that your church can. These catalogues are usually available only to churches, but some schools run them too. If you do not want to step on anybody’s toes, you could run your church’s catalogue only during the school’s summer holidays.

You could hold cookie dough sales. If every household in the congregation gave two pounds of cookie dough, the kids could go out and sell it on Saturday and Sunday mornings. This works well a couple of days before a big Bank Holiday like Thanksgiving or Independence Day. it also works quite well throughout the summer.

You could give a dinner dance with guest speakers. The dinner could also have a theme – a different one (or none) every time, until you find the most popular: Barn Dance, Viennese, Cajun, Gypsy et cetera. The food would match the theme and so would the music. The speaker must not be the vicar or the charity’s president, but should be someone off the guest speaking circuit – someone who can bring the house down with humorous anecdotes and stories.

Do not make them cheap, aim to double your money and invite local business to buy a table of six or eight for their star employees and customers. if you go down this route, you could also organize a boxing event with dinner jackets and a five course meal.

Ask the local amateur boxing club to help set up a series of bouts with a neighbouring town and offer them 20% or whatever. They may do it free for the free publicity or they could hold the raffle (the prize could be the winner’s boxing gloves signed by all the contestants).

You could hold a day out with a difference. You could have a travelling fair erect its rides (but pay a rent for the privilege) and you could have stalls and small ‘cafes’. You could hire a bouncy house for kids to go moonwalking (and charge for it), but what would make it really different would be if the local amateur dramatic society put on a suitable play for you.

I do not what you would call suitable: it could be a classic, a comedy or even a pantomime, but obviously you would have to give them time to learn their lines, so you would have to plan well in advance. They hold outdoor plays like this in rural Thailand and they empty villages for miles around.

Charity Stores And Wardrobe Clear Outs

One way of dividing up people that crosses the barriers of age, sex, religion and ethnicity is whether you are a hoarder or not. There are a lot of hoarders, although some hoarders refer to themselves as collectors or only nostalgic.

That last sentence might be a bit unfair. Collecting can be explained away as a hobby and nostalgia can be thought of as a yearning for days when we were in better shape.

However, what it all comes down to for billions of households is the buildup of old junk and old clothing. My mother and her mother had decades of clothes that they were sure would come back into fashion one day.

They were almost certainly right and it probably did, but they had to look after the stuff for twenty or thirty years and then teenagers were wearing it, not middle-aged mothers and grandmothers.

My point is that we ought to clear out our closets and wardrobes more frequently in order to create space and pass things on to people who can use them now rather than in twenty years time. I think that closets should be gone through once or twice a year.

Apart from seasonal gear, if you have not worn something for months, there has to be a good reason. Either you do not like it any more; you have gained weight or it does not suit you. So why not pass it on? Write it off and let someone else benefit from it before the moths do.

You could take them to the Salvation Army, Shelter or any other charity shop or wait for your local church, school or scout brigade to hold a fund-raising bazaar or bring-and-buy sale.

This clears out room for you so that you can see the wood for the trees, allows a charity to profit from your surplus and allows someone more needy than you to wear decent quality clothing at less than the retail cost.

If you have let things drift a little, not to worry. There are charity shops that have racks specializing in old-fashioned gear. They call it retro and there are loads of people who enjoy wearing it.

There are also theatre and film companies scouring the secondhand clothes stores searching for period clothing. One of your old suits could be in the next Fifties remake!

However, passing your old, decent quality clothing on to charity shops or specialist retro stores, whether you donate or sell them, is only one side of the coin. You can also purchase from these shops.

If you have not been in a charity shop for years or think that you would not be seen dead in one, then you ought to go along and have a look. They are no longer the sad, amateurish places that they once were. They are run professionally and have a decent turnover of stock. They are a particularly good source of warm winter clothing such as overcoats, so why not do everyone a favour and go and have a look sometime soon?

U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s ‘Toys for Tots’ Program

The U. S. Marine Corps Reserve has a sixty odd year old program to collect toys for tots from needy families both in the United States and in other countries. The goal is to collect new unwrapped toys during October, November and December every year and then give those toys out as Christmas presents to disadvantaged children in the community in which the campaign is being conducted.

Their objective is to bring a message of hope to disadvantaged children in order to encourage them to become ‘responsible, productive, patriotic citizens’ in the words of their website.

One of the main aims of Toys for Tots is to unite the communities where U.S Marine Reserve units are stationed for the three months of October, November and December each year in the gathering and distribution of new toys to children from less well-off families in order to help them experience the joys of Christmas.

One of the aspirations is that the recollection of receiving these gifts every year will encourage the kids to appreciate the communities where they live and take an active part in those communities when they become older.

Communities where there is no unit of U.S. marine Corps Reserves can also take part in the program but they should first register for authorization. These non-Marine organizations will usually, but not always, be ex-Marines.

These groups organize fund-raising events throughout the year in order to finance the purchase of new toys since donations of new toys do not always meet the groups’ needs. These fund-raising events could include sports days, golfing tournaments, bicycle races, swimming tournaments et cetera.

Toys for Tots started in 1947 when Major Bill Hendricks, USCR and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and handed out 5,000 toys for deprived children in the local area.

The original notion sprang from Major Hendrick’s wife, Diane, who had made a doll for a deprived child. She gave it to her husband to give to a fitting charity. When he could not find one, she suggested that he start one himself, so he did just that.

The following year Marine Corps Reserve units across the country adopted the plan and it has been actively providing toys to disadvantaged tots ever since. Walt Disney got involved from the very beginning by designing the logo that the Marine Reserve charity still makes use of today.

Other celebrities to become involved in the early days were Nat ‘King’ Cole, Peggy Lee and Vic Damone, who recorded the Toys for Tots theme, which was written specially for the charity by Sammy Fain and Paul Webster.

Many celebrities have been played a part over the years. Celebrities like Bob Hope, John Wayne, Doris Day, Lorrie Morgan, Tim Allen, Kenny Rogers and Billy Ray Cyrus. First Lady Nancy Reagan acted as the national Spokesperson in 1983 and First Lady Barbara Bush served as the national Spokesperson in 1992. She wrote in her autobiography tenderly of her involvement with Toys for Tots and called it one of her favourite charities.

Help A Charity Organization Through Donating A Car

There are many ways to support one’s favorite charity. Donating one’s time and resources is always welcome. People can give money, food and used items like shoes, clothes and furniture. Donating a car is another thing they can do, and get a tax deduction in the process.

Actually, any old or unused vehicle – trucks, vans, SUVs – can be donated to charity. Even if they are no longer running or in need of extensive repair, charitable organizations will still take them and put them to good use. They can either fix them then give them to deserving families or individuals, or they can sell them and use the sales proceeds for other projects.

Repairable vehicles can be fixed and given to families who need it. These families cannot afford to buy cars, but they need their own transportation to be able to access better jobs. Having their own vehicle would also enable them to move to better areas in terms of living conditions, but commuting to shops and jobs is not a good option in some cases. A car donation charity can help them overcome these difficulties and make a better life for themselves and their families.

Even donated vehicles that are too old or too damaged can still be used to benefit the people supported by charities. By selling them for parts or scrap metal, the charity can raise money to fund other projects and activities. The money can also be used to sponsor children or offset operation costs.

Some people might say that donating a car to charity is not the only option for people who want to dispose of their old, unused or damaged vehicles. That is true. However, the two most common alternatives, selling their car themselves and trading them in a dealership, requires a significant amount of time and effort from vehicle owners.

Selling one’s car is not easy. One has to put up ads, answer inquiries, oversee test drives and try to close the sale with a prospective buyer. Car owners can try trading their vehicle in a dealership to avoid the inconveniences of trying to do the selling themselves, but they may never be sure that they are getting a fair price. Donating their car to charitable organizations is an easier process that gets them a tax deduction at the same time.

It is important for donors to get the fair market value of their vehicle, since the tax deduction will be based on this. However, if the charity is selling the vehicle, the tax deduction is equivalent to the amount that it is sold for. For instance, a car valued at $1500 but is sold for $1000 entitles the donor to a $1000 tax break.

Donating a car or other types of vehicles is a generous way of showing support to a deserving charity. By being able to provide other families their own transportation or giving the charity another means to fund projects, donors are making a difference in other people’s lives, whether they know it or not. Getting a tax break is just icing on the cake.

Should you have a car that may not sell for much, why not look into donating a car to one of the many charity organizations in your city or town. Finding a car donation charity is worthwhile and will count as a deduction on your taxes.

What To Do To Get Car Donation Tax Deduction

For the less fortunate, there are charities that help them in any way that they can. And these charitable organizations raise money and resources for their activities and charity missions through various fund raising activities and by accepting various kinds of donations. These donations may be in cash or in kind, like car donations.

The practice of donating cars to charity has been there for quite some time but it was only recently when clear stipulations for car donation tax deduction were stipulated in the tax laws that were enacted in the recent years.

So if you have an old car and you are planning to buy a new one and you want to free up the garage space, you could donate it to charity and avoid all the hassle. Look for a charitable organization that is eligible to accept car donations so that you can avail a car donation tax deduction.

By donating your car to charity, you can avail of a tax write-off and you can also help the charity’s charitable activities in the process. With a single act, you can do something good for your less fortunate fellowmen and you can gain something for yourself in return, aside from the good feeling of having done something good.

And when really decided on donating a car to a charitable organization, one must make sure that the organization is eligible to accept such a donation. One can only avail of a tax deduction if one donates it in the proper way and observes the procedures specified by the law.

Car donation donors can get the necessary documents from the IRS and can help them determine the eligibility of the target charity and the eligibility of a donor to avail of tax deduction. If a charity is not eligible to accept donations like cars and other vehicles, a donor will not be able to avail of a tax deduction.

And for one to avail of a car donation tax deduction, there is some paper work that needs to be done. There are charities that help with the whole procedure especially by processing the car donations made to them and give their donors tax deductible receipts.

Donors need to have a written acknowledgment from the charity and to file this with their tax returns for them to avail of the car donation tax deduction. It is also very important to keep car pictures and all the pertinent documents and receipts so that they are handy when need arises.

It is always more enjoyable to file your taxes when you know you will get a big return. If you have an old car you are no longer using, consider donating it to get supplemental car donation tax deduction. There are many car donations that are helpful to various charity organizations.

Donate Car To Charity Even With Parking Violations For Car Donation Tax Deduction

There are many people these days that are on the lookout for assistance to donate a car to charity. This is because these people may have a number of vehicles and most of them are impending to go to the junk site since they have not been used for a very long time. With this, they would rather opt to donate it to charity.

But apart from just donating, people would also like to take advantage of the car donation tax deduction that comes with the donation procedures. This will be a great assistance for their taxes once they have filed them properly. And if you like a bigger return this can help with that.

However, one of the main questions people have is whether they can donate cars to charity even if the car has some parking violations on it? The answer is that they can still donate them to get a car donation tax deduction by following these steps.

First of all, do the regular car donation procedures. This is much the same as if you were donating a car without any parking violations. This will insure you do the things that you are supposed to do. Then find the charity where you want to donate your car for the best purpose.

After finding the charity, it’s very important to fill out the documents that will be helpful for the whole transfer so that the new title holder or owner will be the receiving charity. Aside from this, proper documents should also be provided so they can document the transfer properly.

Third, it is also important for the donor to keep copies of the several documents. The reason for this is that it will be needed once you file your tax return for benefits.

Fourth, you now need to remove the plate number from the car. Doing this will benefit both the donor and the receiver. First of all, it will prevent the new owner from shouldering the parking tickets that the donor has obtained. For the donor, it will also save them from any parking violations that they have incurred. The charity can get another license plate now that they are the new owner of the vehicle.

Last, but definitely not least, it is also mandatory to let both the general and local Division of Motor Vehicles offices know about the donation and title transfer. If these steps are followed properly, a person will be able to donate cars to charity without any problems and have the car donation tax deduction that they want to obtain.

If you have ever considered the idea to donate car to charity there are many car donation programs that are available for your benefit. Why not donate your car and you can receive a car donation tax deduction in the process. In the long run this will save you money and give you a chance for charity.
