The Hello Kitty Brand Just Gets Better and Better

Over twenty years ago, I remember going to my local mall and buying all manner of things Hello Kitty. Back then, Hello Kitty was something new for little girls and even older girls. Today, Hello Kitty is still around and my twins like Hello Kitty too. That is cool! How I liked Hello Kitty fifty years ago!

Wow, that is a long time to share the love of Hello Kitty with much of kids and now my twins love her too. This lovable toy (character) appears to find its way through each generation. I remember when Hello Kitty was introduced into the marketplace, at least when I first saw her in shops and malls.

I remember my mall had a Hello Kitty store, full of all this Hello Kitty merchandise. I must have been nine or ten when I purchased my first Hello Kitty toy.

I was purchasing this gorgeous kitty cat and so were my friends. All my friends, from the district and school, had this little kitty and I remember taking mine to school and showing off my latest ?pet? toy.

You may think the Hello Kitty toy (character) was created in Japan, but that is incorrect. As it turns out, Hello Kitty and her family, were created in Europe in 1974. Now, the firm that makes this endearing character is Sanrio, a Japanese firm, but she was created in Europe.

Did you realise that Hello Kitty has a twin sister? Yes, her twin sister?s name is Mimi and her parents are George and Mary. It is as if these characters are real, in a sense. As I stated above, now my twins, who are not identical, like Hello Kitty and are best friends just like Mimi and Hello Kitty are.

The Hello Kitty brand has expanded in a big way. When this merchandise was first created, all that was available to little girls were some toys and note books. Now, almost everywhere you go, mall, strip mall, mass retailers and online, you will find clothing such as tank tops, shirts, sweaters, socks, boots, flip flops, umbrellas, watches, rings, necklaces, backpacks, luncheon boxes, clocks and so much more.

Anything you want can be found in their stores and online. There seem to be more goods online than in stores, but it appears more and more Hello Kitty products are being produced and added everyday.

Some more things you child might like are a selection of video games – there are quite a few video games to play these days. Along with video games, there are movies, books, stickers and tattoos. The theme of Hello Kitty goes on and on. It does not matter where your child is, they can get and or use Hello Kitty.

If your child is having a party, you can purchase party plates, cups, decorations and face painting kits. If you or your child has a mobile phone, you can now use a cell phone cover or case for your iPhone4.

Little girls, or older girls, can purchase Hello Kitty bedding as well. For adult women, if you use a credit card, a Hello Kitty Credit Card is now obtainable too. Hello Kitty has been and continues to stay a very popular brand for kids and adults alike.

Christmas Eve Fun For Children

So, what are you going to do with the children on Christmas Eve to make the day that bit more special for them and tire them out enough so that they will sleep through to at least nine o’clock on Christmas Day, because that is the actual reason behind the party in the first place.

Some of these games can be played before or even on any big day and some may be modified for different age groups, because in essence, they are just ideas for you to play with.

1] Hire a face painter. Lots of students from the local art college can do face painting and children love it – girls particularly adore Hello Kitty and a face painter could do half a dozen kids in an hour. You could theme your face painting to match your party. Do this first thing to get the party moving along.

2] Some households have a tradition that everybody in the family is allowed to open one present on Christmas Eve, but that the rest have to be a surprise for the big day. So why not drag out the action of giving the present by turning it into a Treasure Hunt?

This is also a great means of getting the children out of the way, when you are worrying about those last minute items that you need to get on with. A lot of people keep old Christmas cards to cut up for decorative purposes, so you could compose clues on the cards and put them about the house and backyard.

3] A little more sedate, but still lots of fun, is a sing-song. Do this after tea to give the food chance to go down. You don’t have to sing carrols (in fact best not to, they will already have had enough of them).

Try some choral singing. Sit everybody around the room or in a circle outside and sing songs where a quarter of the circle starts, and the next quarter comes in after a few bars.

You might also attempt memory songs like: “I am the music man and I come from down your way and I can play….” or “Tomorrow is Christmas Day and in my Christmas stocking I will get an …Apple”, the following one repeats the refrain, but says an Apple and a Bunny” and so on to Z. A circle is also great for Chinese Whispers.

4] A different fun circle game is Musical Chairs and another is Pass The Parcel. Musical Chairs is a good game for using up some of the energy that eating will have restored to the party-goers.

So is Pass The Parcel although it is far more sedate in that the children remain seated. Both games get younger children to hoot with laughter and help tire them out.

5] A harder game is Where is Santa? A child is picked to be Rudolf and is escorted out of the room to get blindfolded whilst someone is picked to become Santa. Rudolf is brought back in and paced in the middle of the circle still blindfolded.

Santa has to wink at a variety of individuals who have to say “Yo, ho, ho”. Santa is the only one who never speaks.

6] How about Pin the Tail on the Reindeer for the final game and give a prize for the winner of every game.

Tennis Racket

When I was a fairly young boy of about 10 years of age, my mother wanted me to learn tennis, so she bought me a tennis racquet for Christmas so that I might take up the hobby. There had been many options in terms of choosing a tennis racquet. My mother told me later and it had been quiteconfusing.

My mother had gone to a sports shop and chosen one racquet out of the three that I guess were in her price bracket at that time. But today, choosing a racquet can be a very hard job. Brands, materials, technologies – they all add to the difficulty of making a choice.

The various options one has today in a sports store can often be disconcerting. So what elements should be taken into account when picking a tennis racket?

To start with, focus on the grip size. Children would probably find that up to size four would suit them best while adults may go up to 4 and five-eighths of an inch in order to get a better grip of the tennis racquet.

The head size is also quite important when choosing your racquet. Probably women and children would prefer the head size to be smaller and offer more precision and would reject the larger head size tennis racquet which requires more strength although it provides more precision when hitting the ball.

The middle size is somewhere between 85 and 95 square inches and this is the one that suits the majority of players, whether amateur or professional. Novices are recommended to buy a larger-head tennis racket as they would not focus so much on precision but rather on the power that the racquet will supply to their hit.

Another factor to bear in mind is the flex quality of the tennis racquet. If the racquet is stiff you will almost certainly have more power when hitting the ball because the energy is not lost due to bending.

The more flexible racquet would not maintain the amount of energy the ball initially had before you hit it, but it would definitely offer greater control over the direction of the ball.

Professional and good amateur players prefer flexible racquets because they do not need to preserve the ball’s energy as they can hit the ball as hard as they require anyway. They would always be more interested in controlling the ball.

Of course, another factor related to this would be the material that the racquet is made of and the technology that has been used in its manufacture. These two elements should inform the buyer on how flexible or stiff the tennis racquet really is.

Basics Of Tennis Explained

On the face of it, tennis is a fairly simple game – you have to take it in turns to hit a ball and make it land inside a set of lines. It is also quite cheap to play – once you have a ball and a racquet, you can play in a T-shirt and shorts or skirt. None of this equipment is especially expensive, unless you go for famous names.

The rules are low in number and easy too. However, there are some rules and a knowledge of these rules will permit you to gain more enjoyment from the game whether you intend playing it or merely watching it.

Most top tennis matches are played by two people: one in each team. However, in amateur games lots of people like to play in doubles, which means having two players on either team. Mixed doubles means men and women playing together – one man and one woman per team.

When players would like to play tennis all they need to take to the tennis court are a tennis racquet every and two tennis balls between them. White clothing is the most generally accepted uniform for playing tennis in, but you can wear pretty much what you like otherwise – short or long trousers, short or long skirt, short or long sleeved shirt.

Trainers and short white socks or no socks is the standard footwear. You may decide on to wear a sunshade as well if the sun is strong or you may injure your eyesight if you look into the sun while tracking the ball. The difficulty with sunglasses or a sunshade is keeping them in position, because tennis is a very active game.

Tennis courts are a regulation size being the same everywhere in the world. The court is separated in half by a net set at a regulation height. The outside line parallel to the net is the base line and is the place where most players await a service. Serving has to be done between the base line and the inner parallel line of the service box.

Services are made from the left to the right and from the right to the left in turn so as not to benefit left or right handed players. Along side the court running at 90 degrees to the net a narrow rectangle. These boxes are only valid areas of play in doubles matches. If the ball lands in there during a singles match, the ball is called ‘out’ (of play).

The game is begun with a service. A player serves the ball into the opponent’s service box on the opposite side to where he or she is standing. The ball has to bounce in that service box or the service has to be restarted and the opponent receives a point. The ball is then hit back and fore until a fault is created.

A complete game is made up of several sets and service alternates between teams for each set. The scoring is quite easy, but the numbers used are bizarre.

Maerklin Model Train Sets

Every boy wants a model electric train set and every father wants him to have one as well. I am not talking about the toy train sets that families like to have running around the Christmas tree, I mean proper train sets that can be extended and built upon – train sets that you can grow fanatical about and some people do, don’t they?

Some people’s childhood enthusiasm for model electric train sets becomes a life-long adult passion. This is why some of the original model electric train sets are so expensive. After all, few children could afford the prices that some early model electric train sets command.

One model electric train set manufacturer whose products are the top of the tree with the best of them is the German company Maerklin, which began producing clockwork model trains and expandable track in 1891.

Maerklin had produced dolls’ houses first of all, but they soon realized that the model train set enthusiast might be like a dolls’ house owner. That is that they might want to add to their collection after their initial purchase. Therefore, Maerklin offered basic model train sets but with a whole range of accessories that could be added on later.

Maerklin model electric train sets come in a selection of scales and gauges, many of which Maerklin itself defined as international standards. For instance, in 1891 Maerklin introduced the 1-5 gauge at the Leipzig Toy Fair and it was quickly adopted as the world’s standard gauge for model train sets.

It followed this up with the O gauge somewhere between 1895 and 1901; the HO scale in 1935 and the Z scale in 1972. These days, however, modern Maerklin model electric train sets are only available in Gauge 1, HO scale and Z scale.

These days it is very hard and very expensive to get hold of earlier examples of Maerklin model electric train sets. In 2005, thieves broke into the Maerklin museum in Goeppingen and stole 100 pieces of Maerklin trains and accessories – a value of 1,000,000 Euros was placed on the haul.

They were later recovered in 2005. In Philadelphia, USA, a complete Maerklin train station and accessories was sold at an international auction for $110,000, despite the fact that it was considered that the final selling price would be in the vicinity of $30,000.

Maerklin were truly one of the world’s top innovators in the model electric train set market for about a hundred years, but the company has fallen on difficult times. It filed for insolvency in Germany in February 2009, although a year and a day later, it returned to profitability.

In the 150 years since its foundation as a company, Maerklin has usually been at the vanguard of the ideas and technology in its field. Even today, Maerklin is still the world leader for all important gauges in the model railroad market, since no other current day manufacturer gives collectors the possibility of adding to existing railtracks and collections.

If you are eager to own some early Maerklin trains or accessories, you can look on Ebay, they do pop up every now and again, but do not presume to find yourself a good deal, the earlier model electric trains were all hand-painted in great detail and they hardly ever sell for less than $25,000.

Maglev: Train Technology Of The Future

Magnetic levitation or maglev for short is the technique of making a vehicle, more frequently than not a train, hover over the ‘track’ and move by the use of magnets. Magnetic levitation has the potential to move trains more quickly and more quietly than conventional wheel-based trains. Surprisingly, most of the power consumed is used to overcome wind resistance at high speed, not to keep the train hovering in mid-air.

You would be forgiven for imagining that maglev is new technology, but in fact the first American patent was filed by a German inventor in America in 1907. It then took 74 years before the first commercial maglev train came into service in 1984 in Birmingham, United Kingdom. However, that particular installation became quite unreliable and it was taken out of service in 1995.

The fastest recorded speed of a maglev train under test conditions was in Japan in 2003. It ran at an impressive 361 mph, but that is only 3.5 mph faster than France’s TGV, which has been in service for four decades. The TGV’s top speed of 357.2 mph was surpassed by the Chinese Harmony Express in 2009.

However, these latter day wheeled services are based on tried and tested technology on which hundreds of billions of dollars has been spent over nearly 200 years. If more attention and investment were lavished on the maglev, it would surpass conventional train speeds fairly easily.

The most flourishing maglev train in operation nowadays runs to Shanghai airport like the British one ran to Birmingham Airport. However, the similarity between the two ceases there. The British maglev travelled at up to 26 mph, whereas the Chinese, but German built, maglev runs at a top speed of 160 mph.

Much of the early research and development was carried out in Britain by Professor Eric Laithwaite from after the Second World War to 1973, but Germany is the main influence on the maglev train now, although Germany is working closely with the Chinese and the Japanese to develop the technology.

One of the major stumbling blocks for maglev trains is infrastructure. Maglev trains are incompatible with conventional rail rack so they have nowhere to go. Laying new maglev track is not horribly expensive, but it is dear and would involve having two sets of incompatible rails running alongside each other for a number of decades, which would obviously take up twice as much land.

Having said that, some advancement was achieved in designing rails that could be used by both technologies but the endeavour was allowed to fall fallow.

So, the history of magnetic levitation trains began with a German inventor more than a hundred years ago and although they lost track of the scheme for thirty years or so during and after the War, German scientists and engineers are back at the vanguard of this fascinating technology, which will surely supplant our traditional train and track systems in the future.

If the electricity required to run them were manufactured by methods other than fossil fuel, these very quiet trains would go a long way to decreasing pollution in both inner cities and the countryside.

Backyard Pool Accessories

Millions of people love to swim in their gardens about the world. Swimming and playing in the water is great fun, even if you have to go to a pond, pool, a river or the sea to do it. in order to make full use of a garden pool, you do have to live in a place where the weather is warm. The owner also has to have to have some money as pool maintenance charges are high.

Therefore, when people have gone to the expense of having a garden pool installed, they also like to have the pool used as often or as much as they can. You can encourage your friends and family to use the pool more frequently by making it more fun and more comfortable to do so. Pool accessories or swimming accessories are a means of achieving this.

People like to be in the water, so you could make it straightforward for them by using poolside furniture that will float whilst supporting an adult. There are various objects like floating seats, floating tables and plastic inflatable lidos that will keep you and your guests in contact with the water. Good floating furniture will also support people out of the water, cheap stuff will not.

If you like the notion of floating in your pool while sitting on a chair reading a book, this sort of furniture is for you. Lots of these seats have an in-built glass holder and float so that your waist is at the water line, although this just depends on the chair and the person sitting in it.

Then there are floating sun loungers which do roughly the same thing as a floating seat, except they tend to hold your whole body out of the water so that you can get an even sun tan. Inflatable lidos or rafts are comparable items, although the inflatable lido or camp bed is a very cheap device compared with the more solid floating chairs and loungers.

Other objects that you could use to increase the enjoyment of your garden pool are aquatic games. You could string up a water polo net or a water volley ball net in order to get people moving. Beach balls are another good idea for encouraging play in the pool. If you are on your own, you could only float about in an inflated truck tyre. They are very comfortable and very cheap.

If you are dead set on relaxation at your pool, you could construct a poolside bar. The bar stools could be in the water, if your pool is big enough, otherwise you could incorporate the pool bar into a breakfast bar where you can prepare and eat light meals. Heavy meals are not healthy for swimmers anyway.

Pool accessories or swimming accessories will heighten your enjoyment of your pool and make your friends and family wait for you next invitation to come around for a swim impatiently. Most of these items do not have to be costly either.

The History Of The Common Tennis Ball

A tennis ball is very distinct and are used by millions of children and adults all over the world for playing tennis, obviously, but many, many other less formal games as well. They are not merely the right size for tennis, presumably anyway at 2.7 inches or 6.7 centimetres in diameter, but they also fit neatly into a hand or a dog’s mouth. Consequently people use them for playing catch, for various games of softball like rounders and for throwing for the dog to bring back.

When I was a youngster, all tennis balls were white, but now you would be very hard pressed indeed to find a white one if, if indeed it is at all possible. These days, all tennis balls are day-glow colours like yellow, green and orange. Presumably this modification was carried out for the purpose of visibility on the TV screen.

The word ‘tennis’ comes from the French – ‘Tenez’ (pronounced ‘teney’), which meant ‘Take up Position’ or simply ‘Begin’. The origins of tennis were almost certainly more than a thousand years ago, when it was played by monks. The racquet or racket was the flat of the hand and the ball was wooden.

No-one is really certain whether the next innovation was to wear leather mitts or to modify the ball to leather, but whichever it was, there was obviously a move to make the game less painful. When the ball changed from being wooden, it was manufactured of animal skin, most often leather, sewn up with sinews and stuffed with anything that came to hand, such as straw, wool and hair – animal and human.

The point is that these early wooden and leather balls did not bounce, so the game was very different back then. Eventually, the monks began using ‘racquets’, but they looked more like bats than modern day tennis racquets.

In Disraeli’s book, “Sybil” (1845), the plot reveals how Lord Eugene De Vere was to travel to Hampton Court to play tennis, so the game was a familiar sport then, but it took until the late Nineteen Century for the game that we know today to become formalized by a set of rules. In 1874, Major Walter Wingfield was granted the patent for the rules and equipment of ‘lawn tennis’ and not much has altered since.

The next year tennis courts were established in the USA and then the game of tennis spread like wildfire. Wingfield laid down the rules of the game and the sort of apparatus to be used. The game has not changed much since then basically, but it has changed a lot nevertheless. The outline of the court is different now and science has been applied to the apparatus to improve it.

The original ball in the late Nineteenth Century was manufactured of solid rubber and so would have been quite weighty, but at least it did bounce which instantly made the game more interesting and more lively. A bouncing ball made tennis into a more interesting game to play and a more interesting game to watch. The rubber ball allowed tennis to be a spectator sport that crowds would pay to watch.

Contemporary tennis balls have a rubberized skin, which is about eighty percent rubber, filled with air and covered by a layer of ‘hairy’ felt. The felt is vital because it gives the surface of the ball more grip and can standardize the bounce as well. It also gives the ball a more predictable flight path even in the presence of wind.

The last aspect of contemporary tennis balls is the air inside. This can either be pressurized or non-pressurized. Pressurized balls give a better bounce whilst new, but they lose pressure over time and so are less consistent, whereas non-pressurized balls actually improve slightly with use, which is considered a benefit.

Vehicle Stereo Systems

It is a simple expression – car stereo – but on the whole people pay more attention to the car stereo device than they do to their home stereo. Many people are fairly happy with a run of the mill home stereo and will never talk about it in conversation, but the car stereo! Well, that is a different kettle of fish. People want speakers in each door, sub-woofers front and back and a graphic equalizer.

The majority of modern cars come with some form of car stereo already fitted, but these can be quite basic systems.

In the early days of auto audio systems, car stereos were not much more than smaller versions of indoor, home stereo set-ups. However, the environment was completely different and musical purists could tell that they were getting a raw deal. The speakers were too close together and the vibrations from the car?s engine rattled everything apart. Speakers were puny and frequently blew.

Enthusiasts began to demand better quality car stereo set-ups . The notion of a dedicated car stereo, if not yet the product itself was born.

Some vehicle manufacturers include their own, factory-fitted makes of audio system. BMW falls into this category. All of BMW?s cars are delivered with a BMW car audio system. Many top car makers like to maintain this level of control over the quality of their vehicles.

Other car manufacturers, like Mercedes, prefer to leave the production and technology of such secondary vehicular accessories to third parties such as Blaupunkt.

Blaupunkt, a German company, takes this degree of accountability very, very seriously. It is a huge mark of prestige that they have won the contract to supply car audio systems to businesses like Mercedes. This reputation gains them many more sales from people who want the same quality that is linked with Mercedes luxury vehicles.

Most of the standard systems these days incorporate a multi-band radio and a CD player, which may or may not have a CD auto-changer in the boot of the car. The most up to date car audio systems may also have MP3 and Internet access. These more recent stereo units usually allow the driver to plug in external media devices containing music or other files.

If you have an older car, you may want to upgrade your car stereo system to that of something that better fits your requirements. This could be accomplished by simply changing the speakers or even adding further speakers.

However, you may think that it is easier or just better to just change the whole caboodle. There are many options regarding car stereos, but if you cannot perceive the difference then there is no real point.

After all, music should not be a distraction from the main reason for sitting in a car in the first place, which is to get from A to B safely.

Swimming With Dolphins

Any time of the year is a good time for planning family holidays, but you ought to plan well ahead in order to get the exact holiday that you want. The perfect family vacation certainly depends on the type of family that you have: is it a young family; are the children all boys; are the children and the parents for that matter daring or not; are they sporty or laid back?

Some individuals who do not get enough excitement during the year, like say office workers, prefer to go on adventure vacations when that time of the year comes around, whereas people with active jobs may prefer to laze around, say on a cruise, although cruising is not the perfect vacation for young children. There again, you might prefer to go on a vacation where you can take your dog.

In fact, it does not matter where you go or what you do, family vacations are times for giving the kids special memories that will stay with them for ever and family vacations also allow some very busy parents to bond with and get to know their children better.

Family holidays can also be used to expand children’s horizons: city kids can go and look at the countryside or the seaside and vice-versa or you could take them abroad so that they can actually meet foreigners and learn a few words of another language.

One holiday that would permit adventure and seaside lounging around would be a trip to swim with dolphins at Discovery Cove, Florida, which is located near SeaWorld. People are shown around Discovery Cove in small classes so that you get to ask all the questions you want.

One hitch is that children under six years of age are not permitted to swim with the dolphins, but other than that, all the equipment you will need and lunch are included in the cost. It is not especially cheap to swim with dolphins because dolphins are expensive to feed and keep in a healthy state, but it is definitely an unforgettable experience. It is a boon that all the apparatus is included in the price covering things like wet suit, snorkel, flippers and even towels.

However, you have to pre-book, you cannot only walk in off the street. This is so that they can be certain to have enough team-leaders and enough apparatus for everyone. Once you have swum with the dolphins and played with them, the remainder of the day will be yours to enjoy the beautiful beaches, explore the shallows and study the wild birds that are to be found on the property in abundance.

There is also a job training programme for those who think that they want to take up this form of job. Job training or work experience allows you more time with the staff and the animals behind the scenes so that you can get a sense of how such an establishment is run. If you are interested in a day out like these two cases, why not look them up on the Net for more details?
