Many people might think that they would not recognize a beryl, but the fact is that beryl is a crystal that has a number of more well-known forms. Emeralds and Aquamarines are examples of more well-known beryl crystals. Emeralds are dark green, aquamarine is the colour of the sea and there is also a red beryl called bixbite.

As far as we know, the first emeralds were mined near the Red Sea in Egypt at Cleopatra’s Mines. This name was applied later as the mines were first productive 2,000 years before Cleopatra was born. It is considered that the secret location of the mine was lost and only rediscovered in 1818.

It is imagined that most of the emeralds used in the ancient Middle East and Europe came from these mines. The Cleopatra Mines have in fact been exhausted of high quality emeralds and are not mined any more. Columbia and Russia are the primary sources of emeralds these days

Australia and South Africa are also serious sources of emeralds. There are ten or so other sources of emeralds in the world, but they tend to be small or of low quality and of virtually no commercial value.

As stated above, beryls come in various colours under different names. In fact, the colours vary from peach to lavender, besides the more valuable greens and greeny-blues. The beryl that is most used in these other colours is morganite, which can vary from peach to lavender.

Morganite is not a valuable-sounding precious stone, so deceitful traders have tried to rebrand it as ‘Pink Emerald’ or ‘Pink Aquamarine’. Do not get fooled by these half-truths.

Morganite was first discovered in California, but there are also significant build-ups of it in Africa, Brazil and Russia. In spite of its poor status and lack of perceived value, morganite is quite scarce, which makes it a worthwhile present.

A different beryl crystal of a beautiful hue is heliodor, which means ‘gift of the sun’ due to its beautiful, golden, sun-like colour. Heliodor was not found until 1910 and was discovered close to a deposit of aquamarine in Namibia.

Since then, lodes of heliodor have been found in Brazil and Madagascar. The largest crystal of heliodor lies in the Hall of Gems at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC. It weighs in at 2,054 carats or 410.8 grammes (just over 14 ounces). It is faceted and so has been cut.

Two of the rarest variations of beryl are only to be found in America. Red beryl is discovered in the Wah Wah Mountains of Utah, but the stones are tiny and usually flawed with inclusions. However, red beryl is a gorgeous deep shade of red.

There is also a colourless, clear beryl called Goshenite, because it is only known in Goshen, Massachusetts. However, it must have been found elsewhere in the Ancient World, because it is considered that the Ancients used clear beryl for lenses.

The first specs were almost certainly also manufactured out of polished clear beryl.

What goes to make a dog’s dinner? The phrase implies a mess, but most dogs’ dinners these days look fairly appetizing – a bowl of pleasant-smelling biscuits or half a tin of something that seems like cold meat pie filling.

It all looks very lovely to us humans. And that is the whole purpose – dog food is sold to humans on its appearance and aroma.

We don’t really know what the dog thinks of it. We only know that they wolf it down, but then so would you if you were hungry and you knew that the chance was that that was all you would get offered.

The fact is that a dog will consume almost anything if there is sufficient sugar or and salt on it. I had a collie-cross that would eat anything I gave her except Brussels sprouts (she would take them politely and throw them around, but she would not eat them).

It stands to reason that you cannot get a can of good pie filling for a dollar, so whatever is in there will not be best beef. Yet it has to be fit for human consumption, so what is it? Well, to begin with, the gravy is almost certainly manufactured of carcass scrapings and blood, thickened with flour.

That would make it quite nourishing, but not as appetizing as it looks. The ‘lumps of meat’ are probably not meat. They are most probably offal and soy or something comparable. Again, not a bad thing, but not what it is intended to look like to us and the dog will absolutely know that it is not meat.

So what ought to constitute a dog’s dinner? In the wild, a pack of wolves would bring down, say, a deer and rip its stomach open. The contents thereof are the first course. Since wolves by and large eat vegetarian animals, the stomach contents will usually be grass, leaves and other plants.

Then they will move on to the internal organs like heart and liver. The stomach and organs are the best bits and only the top dogs get them. When they are gone, they rip the carcass apart and devour the meat. Later they chew on the bones.

Those are the guiding principles for making a dog’s dinner. if you cook your own evening meal, cook a bit extra for the dog. Liquidize the vegetables to imitate the chewed food that would be in the deer’s stomach. Most decent butchers will have ‘pets’ mince’ or a mixture that they use for producing faggpts (meatballs).

This pet mince usually contains off-cuts, offal and bits of internal organs, some skin, stomach lining and arteries – all the bits they could not sell to their modern customers. That takes care of the dog’s natural second and third courses.

The butcher will also set some bones aside for his best customers, which you will become if you purchase your own and your dog’s food there. Feed the meat raw mixed with the liquidized vegetables. Add an egg and some dry porridge oats to bind it all and provide fibre and you have the ideal dog’s dinner.

This type of meal will vary on its own because you do not cook the same vegetables every day. You could add an apple or other fruit and celery is good as well.

Some people do not like being alone on St. Valentine’s Day. Younger women in particular think that being alone on St. Valentine’s Day bears a stigma, which makes them feel dejected and lonely.

But just because someone is not in a relationship, it does not mean they may not have a happy time. Here are a few tips to help you have a day to remember.

1] Ring up all your single girlfriends and go clubbing. Many young men like to dance every now and again or to their favourite songs, but they do not want to dance non-stop. On the other hand, young women often do like to dance non-stop, so you may have a better time without a boyfriend in a club.

2] Another first-class idea for single girls on Valentine?s Day is to give a movie night at your home. You can invite over all of your single friends and hire a couple of comedies.

Instead of being sad and depressed, you and your friends could watch the movies and take the rise out of the characters in the film.

Hire a couple of horror movies too for an extra special night. Plenty of young people like horror films. They like to have a scream and hide their faces behind their friends’ backs. Treat the evening like a proper night at the cinema and buy or make popcorn, snacks, ice cream, etc..

3] You could throw a singles party. Ask all of your single friends and tell them they have to bring a friend of the opposite sex. Buy or borrow some of those party games that make you reply to personal questions like ‘Forfeits’ and ‘Twister’, where you have to place your hands and feet on different coloured spots on a plastic mat.

‘Mr and Mrs’ is another game where you ask one half of a ‘couple’ questions about the other in his or her absence. The other one has to corroborate the replies when he or she is invited back into the room. The answers could be hilarious, because the people will not know each other well.

4] Hire a table in a non-romantic restaurant and get eight or more girlfriends to go out for a meal. Once the atmosphere starts building, it will be great fun and you could go dancing later.

5] You could organize a trip to the theatre and go for a meal later. Most people do not go to the theatre each year, so going with your friends on St. Valentine’s Day would make the day really unforgettable.

6] You could make up a basket of your favourite items. Include some really extraordinary things like gourmet chocolate or other gourmet candy. Have something lavish to drink that is appropriate to your age.

Then you can pig out on your favourite foodstuffs and drink and watch a few films on your own or with your sister or other family member like a favourite cousin.

There are numerous things you bin do to enjoy Valentine’s Day as a single girl, there’s no require to mope about feeling sorry for yourself at all.

Over twenty years ago, I remember going to my local mall and buying all manner of things Hello Kitty. Back then, Hello Kitty was something new for little girls and even older girls. Today, Hello Kitty is still around and my twins like Hello Kitty too. That is cool! How I liked Hello Kitty fifty years ago!

Wow, that is a long time to share the love of Hello Kitty with much of kids and now my twins love her too. This lovable toy (character) appears to find its way through each generation. I remember when Hello Kitty was introduced into the marketplace, at least when I first saw her in shops and malls.

I remember my mall had a Hello Kitty store, full of all this Hello Kitty merchandise. I must have been nine or ten when I purchased my first Hello Kitty toy.

I was purchasing this gorgeous kitty cat and so were my friends. All my friends, from the district and school, had this little kitty and I remember taking mine to school and showing off my latest ?pet? toy.

You may think the Hello Kitty toy (character) was created in Japan, but that is incorrect. As it turns out, Hello Kitty and her family, were created in Europe in 1974. Now, the firm that makes this endearing character is Sanrio, a Japanese firm, but she was created in Europe.

Did you realise that Hello Kitty has a twin sister? Yes, her twin sister?s name is Mimi and her parents are George and Mary. It is as if these characters are real, in a sense. As I stated above, now my twins, who are not identical, like Hello Kitty and are best friends just like Mimi and Hello Kitty are.

The Hello Kitty brand has expanded in a big way. When this merchandise was first created, all that was available to little girls were some toys and note books. Now, almost everywhere you go, mall, strip mall, mass retailers and online, you will find clothing such as tank tops, shirts, sweaters, socks, boots, flip flops, umbrellas, watches, rings, necklaces, backpacks, luncheon boxes, clocks and so much more.

Anything you want can be found in their stores and online. There seem to be more goods online than in stores, but it appears more and more Hello Kitty products are being produced and added everyday.

Some more things you child might like are a selection of video games – there are quite a few video games to play these days. Along with video games, there are movies, books, stickers and tattoos. The theme of Hello Kitty goes on and on. It does not matter where your child is, they can get and or use Hello Kitty.

If your child is having a party, you can purchase party plates, cups, decorations and face painting kits. If you or your child has a mobile phone, you can now use a cell phone cover or case for your iPhone4.

Little girls, or older girls, can purchase Hello Kitty bedding as well. For adult women, if you use a credit card, a Hello Kitty Credit Card is now obtainable too. Hello Kitty has been and continues to stay a very popular brand for kids and adults alike.

So, what are you going to do with the children on Christmas Eve to make the day that bit more special for them and tire them out enough so that they will sleep through to at least nine o'clock on Christmas Day, because that is the actual reason behind the party in the first place.

So, what are you going to do with the children on Christmas Eve to make the day that bit more special for them and tire them out enough so that they will sleep through to at least nine o’clock on Christmas Day, because that is the actual reason behind the party in the first place.

Some of these games can be played before or even on any big day and some may be modified for different age groups, because in essence, they are just ideas for you to play with.

1] Hire a face painter. Lots of students from the local art college can do face painting and children love it – girls particularly adore Hello Kitty and a face painter could do half a dozen kids in an hour. You could theme your face painting to match your party. Do this first thing to get the party moving along.

2] Some households have a tradition that everybody in the family is allowed to open one present on Christmas Eve, but that the rest have to be a surprise for the big day. So why not drag out the action of giving the present by turning it into a Treasure Hunt?

This is also a great means of getting the children out of the way, when you are worrying about those last minute items that you need to get on with. A lot of people keep old Christmas cards to cut up for decorative purposes, so you could compose clues on the cards and put them about the house and backyard.

3] A little more sedate, but still lots of fun, is a sing-song. Do this after tea to give the food chance to go down. You don’t have to sing carrols (in fact best not to, they will already have had enough of them).

Try some choral singing. Sit everybody around the room or in a circle outside and sing songs where a quarter of the circle starts, and the next quarter comes in after a few bars.

You might also attempt memory songs like: “I am the music man and I come from down your way and I can play….” or “Tomorrow is Christmas Day and in my Christmas stocking I will get an …Apple”, the following one repeats the refrain, but says an Apple and a Bunny” and so on to Z. A circle is also great for Chinese Whispers.

4] A different fun circle game is Musical Chairs and another is Pass The Parcel. Musical Chairs is a good game for using up some of the energy that eating will have restored to the party-goers.

So is Pass The Parcel although it is far more sedate in that the children remain seated. Both games get younger children to hoot with laughter and help tire them out.

5] A harder game is Where is Santa? A child is picked to be Rudolf and is escorted out of the room to get blindfolded whilst someone is picked to become Santa. Rudolf is brought back in and paced in the middle of the circle still blindfolded.

Santa has to wink at a variety of individuals who have to say “Yo, ho, ho”. Santa is the only one who never speaks.

6] How about Pin the Tail on the Reindeer for the final game and give a prize for the winner of every game.

In an previous feature about these matchups, Master Chief went 2-2. Can the Master Chief bring his record to more than this, or is he destined for fight club mediocrity?

Master Chief more than likely needs more than Halo 3 cheats to achieve victory in this contest, because he’s up against the all-powerful Q from Star Trek. Everyone knows the Master Chief is a cybernetically enhanced fighter with futuristic armour, shields, and the ability to cure himself. But Q is also a powerful, godlike creature who can make anything happen just by thinking it.

But, unfortunately for aficionados of Halo 3 and Master Chief, our advanced fighter is far over matched. Q may toy with him for a while, but in the end he would just wish him into oblivion. Therefore, so far Master Chief is 0-1.

Halo 3 cheats would not be something to use against the next contestant – he is just too honest. It’s Master Chief versus the most powerful puppet in the universe, Yoda from Star Wars. In reality Yoda isn’t a puppet anymore, because in the new movies he is a CG character. A pitched battle would it be, as Master Chief’s future weaponry Yoda’s mastery of the force faced. Like the battle between Yoda and the Emperor, this one would probably finish in a draw. Good thing these warriors are really both on the same side. Now Master Chief is 0-1-1.

We are also going to give Master Chief some Halo 3 cheats for this next contest, because he will be facing the unbeatable Incredible Hulk. Most people don’t understand the full range of the Hulk’s powers. Not only does he have super human might, superhuman stamina, superhuman durability, and the ability to regenerate himself, in some of his stories he’s also a genius.

But Master Chief has one thing going for him that even the Incredible Hulk cannot beat – patience. All he has to do is wait for the Incredible Hulk to quieten down, change back to his human self, and the Master Chief can jump in for the kill. Master Chief has brought things even at 1-1-1.

How about Master chief against Coach Ditka? If his knees are alright Coach Ditka may as well have the benefit of every one of the Halo 3 cheats ever made. With bad knees the match is merely made a bit closer. But in the end coach Ditka wipes the floor with super hero Master Chief.

Sorry, lovers of Halo 3, but even with Halo 3 cheats Master Chief has a losing score of 1-2-1.

Have you ever wondered what goes into dry dog food? I don’t mean the biscuits, although the same applies to them too really but they are usually quite expensive. I mean the dry dog food that comes in big sacks and proclaims to be a complete dog food. What is in it? The Truth.

Wheat seems to be the largest element, so how can you buy this stuff for $1 a pound, but a decent, two-pound loaf of bread costs $3 or more (in the UK)? The goods in the dog food have to be second-rate, don’t they? Dog food has to be safe for human consumption in the UK, but that doesn’t say much either.

The majority of of this dry dog food, especially the cheaper brands, have to be full of ground bones, fish heads, feathers, sweepings off the granary floor and syrup to boost the calorific value. Surely, it is the canine equivalent of junk food?

I fed my collie-cross almost exclusively on dried dog food for eight years, because I could set the food down in the morning and it did not go off whilst I was at work. She finished up with canine diabetes mellitus.

I took her to the vet one day because she had gone blind ‘overnight. She had advanced cataracts due to diabetes. From that day on, I had to collect some urine in the morning, test it, and then inject her with insulin. Sometimes she had a fit.

I carried on feeding her dry food and over the next months, I had to escalate her insulin often. Soon it was nearly a full syringe and I did not want to give her two shots a day, so I looked for a solution on the Internet.

A vet on a pet forum said that it was ‘common knowledge’ that the high sugar content of cheap dried dog food frequently caused canine diabetes after prolonged use. Maybe, it is common knowledge, but I didn’t know.

Another forum member told me the same and suggested a raw diet consisting of 1 lb green beans, 1/2 lb carrots, 1 lb raw mince meat, 2 raw eggs, calcium powder, bran, multivitamins and 8-12 cranberries. Liquidize the green beans and carrots, mix everything except the cranberries together and partition into four. My 45lb dog had one portion and 2-3 cranberries two times a day.

The very first day I gave it to her she had a fit. I had measured her blood-sugar with the old food in her. The new food did not contain as much sugar, so I had given her too much insulin. The next day her insulin requirement was around 35% of what it had been the day before.

My dog lasted a further two years with the new diet, which my vet said was unusually long, because animals do not get the same degree of after care as humans.

I experimented with the diet during the years and discovered that adding an apple or two or a couple of Brussels sprouts did not affect my dog’s blood-sugar. Ever since then, when I see someone heaving a large bag of dry dog food into the trolley, I feel sorry for their dog.

The house fly is a common flying insect which is found all over the world but is mostly in warmer climates because it is ideal there for their growth. It is an insect with 2 weeks of breeding cycle and lays as many as approximately 500 eggs at a time.

The longest life span of the common house fly is four weeks. Due to such breeding behavior, its number increases many fold within a short period of time, if supplied with appropriate conditions.

Sitting on piles of dung and spoiled food like eggs, fruits, flesh etc, house flies are one of the most widespread means of transferring germs to human beings and other mammals.

These bugs equally like to sit on fresh and rotting food, hence becoming a source of significant illnesses. A single leg of this insect carries millions of harmful germs which are the agents of serious diseases to human beings, threatening their health. They transfer numerous parasitic, viral, and bacterial illnesses.

Whilst in large numbers, these small pests may be a serious headache for residents of that area. To be rid of house flies is more difficult and more challenging because of the domestic nature of these bugs.

It does not matter that these are also flying insects just like mosquitoes, we can?t use the same ways to kill them because flies are bigger in size and are found around food. It could become very hazardous to use pesticides on the flying pests to kill them.

If we do so, it may poison our food and the region too, resulting in serious health hazards. They can be killed by striking them with a fly swatter but this course of action is also risky and awkward because it is impossible to kill a substantial amount of flies like that.

It can also become very unpleasant to see them dead in front of you, particularly whilst you are eating. Instead of targeting the mature flying bugs, we should target the breeding places of these flies.

In order to do that, it is very important to know where the house fly lays eggs. Mostly it lays eggs around dead and decaying organic material. Its eggs are whitish in colour and the larvae or maggots are yellowish.

Examine your environment to determine which places could be appropriate mating and breeding areas for house flies such as places where there is garbage or faeces. Cleanliness is the first step to take in action against these insects.

It is practical to use some insecticides to kill the larvae and pupae of these bugs together with the adults. It will reduce the likelihood of growth in numbers of these flies. Rather than simply throwing your waste out, always process it before throwing it away.

Always keep it covered and never let it become a place for such pests to feed and grow on. You should always dispose off your waste with suitable care. The likelihood of suffering from health issues by such insects can be greatly reduced if we make a little effort to keep our environment clean and hygienic.

There are also items that you could use to kill adult house flies like sticky tape hanging from the ceiling or shelves, although they may be unsightly and the electric fly traps that lure flies with a blue light and kills by electrocution.

Wrist watches are considered not only a device to keep us updated with the time but also a symbol of taste. It is plain from the fact that watch-lovers spend lots of time in choosing a wrist watch which matches their taste.

If it were just an item to tell the time, there is no purpose in being so passionate about selecting a wrist watch. The point of keeping yourself aware of the time could be satisfied by purchasing even the cheapest watch.

People spend much of their precious time and money on a wrist watch which satisfies their requirement to have a unique watch. The selection of a wrist watch depends upon the personal involvement of a buyer in it.

If the aim is to look reasonable by having a reasonable watch, the buyer might not spend as much time and money as he might spend if the aim is to look fashionable, affluent and chic.

Style, shape, colour, technical characteristics and most importantly cost are some of the determining factors that define the efforts invested in the choice of a watch.

1.	Price is a very important factor which highlights the significance of a brand name. Someone who will purchase a very costly watch will definitely be concerned about the uniqueness of the watch.

The watch ought to deliver value by looking exclusive and luxurious. A luxurious watch is meant to reflect the personality of the person wearing it. People also look for a watch of a famous brand because they get satisfaction from the possession of such a watch.

The top watchmakers of the world focus on delivering esteem value to the buyers by using expensive materials like gold, platinum and diamonds, or features like chronography, perpetual calendars and fancy tourbillons. Not just men but women are also concerned with the esteem value of their watch.

2.	A wider categorization of watches is made on the basis of their use i.e. either casual or dress etc.

3.	Colours display a person?s personality. People relate with a particular color. Most people choose between silver and gold color but there are no fewer people who would rather black, brown or even white.

These are some of the more ubiquitous colors but there is an emerging trend among the youth to wear watches of funky, charming and bright colors like pink, aquamarine, and magenta etc.

4.	The material of a watch strap matters quite a bit. There is a wide variety of materials to decide from. It includes leather watches, metallic watches, and crystal watches etc.

5.	A quartz movement also differentiates between watch manufacturers. Seiko being the first watchmaker to introduce quartz watches in the 1960’s; the idea has revolutionized watch movements.

6.	The size of a watch is also worth consideration because it defines comfort. Metallic watches are normally heavier and the leather watches are usually light weight.

7.	Some prefer style more than brand name. Some inexpensive watch manufacturers make very trendy and fashionable watches to target young people.

8.	Technical characteristics define a particular category of watch that a customer may require. Quartz watches, digital watches, automatic watches and sports watches are quite common.

In the end, it is not just one characteristic which guides a buyer in the selection of a wrist watch. Normally, a blend of these reasons helps one to choose from a wide variety of watches.

It seems that fewer people are wearing a watch these days than at any time since the Fifties. Or at least not so many men are, because wrist watches are just as well-liked with women as ever they were. This is probably because women see their wrist watch as a fashion accessory too as a timepiece.

Men are also likely to have a formal watch, but only wear it if they go somewhere special. This is in spite of the fact that there are not lots of items of jewelry that men may wear in the traditional sense. The cell phone is apparently to blame for this change in inclination.

Fortunately, there are thousands of ladies’ wrist watches to choose from in a price range from cheap to shocking. There are great styles and even many colours.

Conventional watches were gold or golden, silver or silver-coloured or stainless steel, but these days you can purchase a wrist watch in almost any colour you like.

Swiss watches have the highest reputation in the world and, in fact, it was a Swiss firm that first introduced the coloured plastic watches called Swatch. At least one model came with an assortment of interchangeable different coloured bezels that can be clipped over the face of the watch so that ladies can harmonize the colour of their watch with their dress or bag.

This was a fantastic idea as Swiss watches are not cheap and before the Swatch, having a few Swiss watches for various outfits represented a sizable investment, especially if you wanted the well-known names like Patek Philippe, Rolex, Omega, Longines, Breitling or Tag Heuer.

Ladies wrist watches also make fantastic gifts. The present of a watch is difficult to misinterpret as watches come in prices and materials to suit any occasion and can suggest emotions ranging from love to affection and gratitude to respect or recognition of an accomplishment.

Because ladies regard their wrist watch as an accessory to their appearance, you have to be thoughtful when purchasing one. For instance, many people will not wear gold and silver together. If you are purchasing for a lady that wears lots of silver, there is not much point getting her a gold watch.

The starting point when buying a ladies wrist watch is obviously how much you would like to spend. You do not really have to spend lots to get something lovely. Then think about where and when you want it to be worn.

Is it to be a watch for every day or a dress watch? After all, a bottle-washer is scarcely likely to want to wear a Rolex to work even if it is water-resistant.

If you are going for a watch for every day use, you ought to do some research, check the prices and then look on eBay or Amazon, where you may save money, but you have to beware of imitations. If you are going for an expensive Swiss ladies’ wrist watch, then it is more prudent to go to an authorized dealer in town.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a number of subjects, but is now concerned with luxury Swiss watches.
