The Benefits of Home Schooling

Home schooling is one the three options available for a child to get an education. The other alternatives are the formal public or private schooling systems. The number of individuals who favour home schooling is rising day by day.

There are more advocates of home schooling now than ever before. According to a survey, there are over 1.4 million home schooled children in America alone now. There are different schools of thought in favour of home schooling.

The advocates of home schooling claim that it is the better alternative for the following causes.

1. Children studying in schools get an environment where they interrelate with children of their same age group. In this manner they are restricted to their own social circle, so they compare and relate themselves with that particular age group. Such children tend to be slow learners as compared to home-schooled children.

The percentage of home-schooled children who pass the common, standard tests is 30 to 37 percent higher than the other children who go to normal school. The fast learning capability of home-school kids is due to their interaction with people from all age classes.

2. Homeschooled kids tend to acquire their identity from society rather than a limited age group at school. Such kids tend to become more realistic and more involved in real life. In comparison to kids who go to school, the homeschooled do not feel alienated from society. Children who go to school also have less time to interrelate with their parents.

Family life is better experienced in this form of education. It provides an chance for parents to be in contact with their children and talk to them about real life issues more frequently. In this way, information tends to be more related to real life rather than only the academic one.

3. The environment in this sort of education is safe when likened to a standard school system. Children are more exposed to moral and physical delinquency in a normal school system. It becomes really difficult for parents and guardians to take care of their kids? events.

In home schooling, parents and guardians have a better opportunity to take supervision of and control the learning environment of their children. Kids studying under this system learn in an environment free from moral, physical and emotional abuse, if their parents do not inflict it.

4. It is claimed that home schooling results in a better transmission of beliefs and values from parents to their children. They learn their ethnicity and morality by watching their parents rather than from books because they spend more time in direct contact with their parents. It assists them to build a more personal relationship with their parents and family.

5. Home schooling provides close and individual attention to the child. The requirements of each child are different and each child requires a different sort of treatment. In this system of education, conditions may be changed to suit the needs of each child.

In spite of the fact that there are so many benefits of home schooling and so many researchers have recommended it, it is important for parents to administer this kind of educational system. If handled in the right manner, it will prove to be more advantageous and successful.

The Pros And Cons Of Homeschooling

Home schooling is the name of educating children at home rather than at some institute like school. It is mostly carried out by parents but in some cases tutors educate the children at their home. Home schooling is also called home education or home-based education.

Home schooling is carried out in the informal setting of your home rather than in the formal educational location of public or private schools.

It is thought to be a legal and viable alternative to formal school education. Most of the proponents of home schooling consider that it is better than other schooling choices for numerous factors. It is thought to be a better system because it has some special benefits which formal schooling does not.

Firstly, parents claim that the results of their children’s exams are better whilst home schooling than in private or public schools.

Secondly, home schooling helps the children in their studies and provides individualized directions based on the individual requirements of the pupils.

Thirdly, more attention is given to each child in home schooling rather than other types of schooling.

Fourthly, home schooling offers a more controlled environment for studying. Parents or home tutors have control over the learning environment and can change it to suit the individual needs of the pupil.

Fifthly, some parents prefer home schooling for religious reasons. They do not agree with the subject matter being taught in public schools which is why they prefer to educate their children in the pure doctrines of their religion.

Sixthly, some parents cannot afford private school and so prefer home schooling rather than public schools because of the advantages of home schooling.

Lastly, home schooling has been more effective in the development of the moral character of children, which is due to the individualized treatment and well-controlled learning environment of home schooling.

Many teachers and educational institutions are against the concept of home schooling. There are different grounds for this opposition.

First, they claim that the educational system of home schooling is sub-normal and does not meet the standard system of education.

Second, the curriculum is not approved and it does not meet the criteria.

Third, the quality of education is not adequate.

Fourth, the children who are educated under home schooling do not get a chance to socialize with other children from different ethnic and social backgrounds. In this manner, such students are prone to becoming religiously or socially extreme.

Fifth, the students are not exposed to public ups and downs and they see only a one-sided viewpoint of society. Parents unwittingly shelter their kids from a true multi-sided picture of society. Such children face hardship in adjusting to society because they are brought up in an artificial environment.

Two, parallel societies are developed by adopting two different educational systems i.e. home schooling and formal schooling. These two parallel societies cannot mix easily and do not collaborate well together. The standards of the community and citizenship are not equally met by both societies.

However, home schooling is definitely a sensible option for people living a long way from schools and migrants. If suitable standards of education are taken into account, home schooling can be the more worthwhile alternative.

When Fear Is A Part Of Life At School

Do you have happy memories of your school years? Do you have happy memories of teachers and school friends? If you do then you were lucky, because some children hate each minute of being in school and not because they are no good at it either. Frequently it is the clever kids who are taunted for being swots and teachers’ pets. They are safe in the class, but the travelling to and from school and the school breaks can become nightmares.

However, it is not only bullying from other children that causes fear in school children. There are other reasons for fear in school as well. Occasionally, children think that a certain teacher does not like them and sometimes children are just frightened of failing or doing badly. Occasionally teachers are frightened of doing badly as well. It can all lead to an atmosphere of fear at school. It makes you ask yourself how anyone could have enjoyed their school days, does it not?

This atmosphere of fear can get greater in state schools because the teachers are subject to success charts and the kids are more open to bullying. Furthermore, all of the school shootings in the world have taken place in state run schools.

However, the most subtle kind of fear in school emanates from teachers who are frightened of missing the targets set by the state, because that will cost them their jobs. This fear is passed on to their students. The regime of fear is made worse by over-sized groups. Why?

Because teachers can hold the attention of only so many pupils – as we all can in normal discourse. Therefore, if the class is too big, the teacher will have to switch roles from being a teacher to a controller. When this occurs, education suffers for the sake of keeping order.

For all of these reasons and more, many crowd are turning to home schooling. Some of the reasons why parents are deciding to instruct their children themselves are: distrust of the state education system; fear of bullying or worse of their children; a desire to educate their children in a more traditional or religious manner.

There are education packages that parent-teachers can purchase to give them guidelines on what to teach. There is also a lot of help accessible on the Internet. The problem facing any parents who wish to educate their own children is providing a rounded education.

All people have a natural tendency to specialize in one subject or group of topics like, say, astronomy or the sciences, which is why schools supply numerous teachers, so that every one can teach his or her favourite topic. However, if you are the only teacher you will have to teach all the subjects yourself.

This is why it is best to have a course or set of guidelines to follow. It is difficult to teach maths if you have no talent for it, so look at your strengths but also your weaknesses before you take the considerable decision to withdraw your children from school and educate them themselves

Learning Speed Reading

What have you been reading lately? In a gathering, you can soon see who the wide readers are, since frequent readers often think and speak well too. They win the admiration, respect, and fellowship of others. After all, reading expands the mind and many people consider it one of the most satisfying pleasures known to mankind, combining, as it does, mental agility and physical relaxation way above the scale offered by television.

The act of reading is primarily a mental activity. After all, you read with your mind and use your imagination to paint the setting of the action thriller you are reading. You use your mind to imagine the pleasure that the main characters are experiencing as the story unfolds; or you bring into play the different arguments and ideas brought up by the author of that self-help book you are studying.

Being able to read effectively helps you to develop an extensive vocabulary through reading different styles of books. A skillful reader recognizes a wide range of vocabulary. The reader may not know exactly what every word means, but he/she will have a general idea of what the sentence means.

The act of reading makes you more alert and more curious about hitherto unknown words. Some readers even like to employ ‘the dictionary habit’, which means that every time they find a strange word, they attempt to work out what it means by the context. If they cannot do this, they refer to a dictionary.

Similarly, reading develops intellectual curiosity by exposing the reader to a variety of subjects. He/she learns to read by reading books of increasing difficulty and variety. Just as in other forms of education, he/she is learning by actually doing and while he/she is reading he/she is automatically learning about the subject matter of the book too – a free by-product!

Reading trains you to have an active and open mind. Merely understanding the writers idea is not enough, you must make a positive response to what you read. Be an active, not a passive, reader. Develop the habit of drawing your own conclusions, the habit of active thinking, of agreeing or disagreeing with the writer. Always keep your mind open; understand and consider the ideas that you read. A practical part of active reading is the drawing of conclusions.

Now let me tell you to the concept of speed reading. All of the above applies between three and ten times over, because speed readers can read that much faster than the average reader! Consider that! – Being able to read, comprehend and remember all those books. You would certainly become well-read in your subject far more quickly than others. Just imagine how that could help you at work or in school or university …

Allow me to share four basic rules for effective reading and better comprehension:

1) Try to read more and more every month. Remember the saying that practice makes perfect. 2) Develop the habit of reading for main ideas. Look for the subject and predicate. Do not waste time on details or little words. 3) Learn to read with focus and concentration. Think of what you are reading. Do not let your attention wander somewhere else. Good readers read with understanding. 4) Learn to budget your time. Experiment with your reading time. Try purposely to read faster. Give yourself a time limit on a specific text that you are reading.

Reading is a wonderfully stimulating mental activity. It expands your understanding and capability. You really have so much to gain by learning the joy of reading. So, go on and get down a book right today.

Avoid Home Schooling Burnout

It doesn’t matter whether you are teaching in a traditional school or in a home schooling environment, there will be a time when you will go through burnout. This is something that you have to prevent so that your educational progress is not affected.

Here are a couple of helpful tips that you can make use of to avoid possible home schooling burnout:

Be aware of your own limitations. From the very start, you should already be aware of your limitations and those of your child. You must be able to taking things slowly sometimes, especially if your child is still very young since you have to bear in mind your child’s capacity to absorb. Most students are average learners (obviously), so you will have to take the lessons according to your children’s learning speed. Never expect your small child to read complicated selections nor your teen to get supa-dupa marks in SAT exams.

Try not to adopt strict schedules, because this can put pressure on your child. You should simply set an interesting routine for your child to follow. Children spend most of their time doing routine activities like getting up in the mornings, eating hearty breakfasts, reading, writing, doing light chores, etc. You must insist that they finish their routine activities before they can play outside or with the computer. Even the routine activities vary from day to day but you have to make sure that your child follows these routine activities. You can add in occasional incentives or fun activities if they finish their routine tasks early.

You should enjoy home schooling with your child. This is one way you can develop a good relationship with your child and if you and your child can relate to each other, you will find it very easy to handle curriculum struggles and motivation problems later. Aside from motivating and guiding your child, you can also pursue some of your own interests like gardening and cooking. If your child sees you pursuing your own interests, then he or she will also be motivated to do the same.

Since your child is in a home schooling program, you should not attempt to copy a traditional schools environment. Try to use unusual ways when teaching your child. Home schooling is also about flexibility and creativity, and if you can achieve a light-hearted but firm atmosphere, you can probably avoid burnout.

Just always try to remember that with home schooling, you don’t have to structure your teaching methods in the traditional way. You can simply do things in an enjoyable manner especially when teaching very young children, so that they learn easily. Ensure you keep the day in the right balance to avoid burnout. Although your children might forget some of the day’s lessons, that’s all right too because somehow children develop their intelligence as well as their physique.

Of course, your children will always cherish your moments together and remember fondly how well you treated them. The song goes: “… there’s no place like home” and for little students this is the best place to learn their first lessons in life. If your teens are already in high school or in college, they too can still pursue home schooling if they want to. That is also a good decision because you get to monitor your offsprings’ performance.

Parents always try to look after their children’s best interests, so, if after careful consideration, you still reckon that home schooling is the right option for your family, then run with it. Just follow the advice stated above in order to prevent burnout. Make time for enjoyable activities from time to time in order to avoid monotony, which may lead to burnout.

Speed Reading – The Early Stages

No one really knows when speed reading was first used, but it might have been a long while in the past. For hundreds of years, reading was the privilege of a minority of the most highly-educated people in the world, the overwhelming majority of whom were monks and priests. This small, select group of men protected their privilege and were loathe to coach the general populace to read. Furthermore, during those hundreds of years there were relatively few books to read compared with today. Books were also very costly as they all had to be copied out by hand. Possibly the only fact that has not altered is that the Bible was the most common book in existence and even now the Bible is the most prevalent book.

The world is fast devolving into a place where individuals are slowly but surely turning their backs on books and becoming fixed in front of monitors or television screens. In such a world, parents should not fail to notice the importance of developing a passion for reading in themselves and their children. Reading is a habit that should be established when the child is relatively young, so what can you do to foster this habit?

Well, there are several strategies you can employ, although one of the best to lead by example. Read with your child every day, even if its only for 10-15 minutes. Allow your child to see you reading. By this I mean, don’t only read in bed before you go to sleep, but instead of watching television from time to time and read your children a bed-time story. Encourage them to read too. You could also:

Register your child for reading classes, if you really don’t have much time or your child is a little slow at reading. There are many well-structured after school reading classes that aim to make books more attractive to children. They help children with articulation, sayings and metaphors. These classes can be fun with animated characters and pictures, especially for young children,. They often make use of picture books, nursery rhymes, comical songs and short stories to fire up the imagination of younger children.

You will have to learn how to arouse your child’s interest. If your child has a favorite character, pick a series of books that include this character. Endeavor to encourage your children to read proper books not comics. The style in comics frequently leaves a great deal to be desired with its sloppy English and street slang. As an alternative, go for series of books like Harry Potter or Tarzan.

You should build yourself a library of your own books. This may sound a little impressive, but after all, a library is only a collection of books. Begin with a good-looking bookshelf that you can easily add to. A skill like reading cannot be learned in only one place, so you cannot afford to leave all the difficult work to the day-school or even the after school curricula. You have to collect books that you think your child will like too. Use the Internet as a resource for learning about the modern reading games that will attract little children to the excellent and ancient art of reading,

Once you child is interested in reading for its own sake, you might read up on speed reading. Speed reading is best suited for educational revision and background reading. It’s greatly suited to cramming or studying for examinations. It is ideal for school and university. Nevertheless, the first job, before you can think about speed reading, is to get your child reading in the first place.

Home Schooling Learning History

Do you consider that passing time in traditional classrooms is a waste of time? For some people, that is probably true. For example, an exam is coming up and the students are asked to memorize a lot of dates and names. However, after taking the exam, they will definitely forget 90% of those dates and names. That’s what most students do every time they have tests. If you are one of these people, you will find traditional history lessons boring, so home schooling, which focuses more on the history of the world, will probably interest you more.

Simple memorization by rote is just not enough to know the importance of historically famous people and fateful events. However, through home schooling in history, you can learn about the different cultures of the past in a different, but interesting way – that is your own way! By the study of history, you will also realize what is happening in the world today.

However, if you consider that home schooling is the most effective option for your child’s learning, you must also be prepared to take on certain responsibilities. Since there will be no teacher present ‘on site’, you will have to oversee your child’s learning development by yourself.

Let’s suppose that your kid is interested in sports. Through history and home schooling, you could start by simply hanging a map on the wall of your child’s room. Mark the location of his favorite sports team and make sure that you track all the team’s activities and schedules. Then, you could go back to history by reading biographies of the various athletes, who had been popular in the particular sport that your child follows. Aside from that, you can also look into the history of that specific sport and discover where it originated, its inventor, and the other things happening at that particular time.

For instance, if your child loves baseball, you can teach your child about the history baseball, government hearings on the use of steroids and other favourite hobbies at that period in time. But remember that you can adapt this method to any interest like dancing, cars or any invention. You can also have conversations with your child about current events or read interesting historical documents and other books. Aside from that, you could also watch documentaries together with the rest of the family. There are various resources that you can use while home schooling, such as TV, maps, newspapers, books, a globe, an atlas, and encyclopedias. Due of the exciting adventures that you and your child will read about and see on film, he/she will find it easier to remember the names and dates of the history lessons. After all, education is better when it is done in an interesting way.

These ways are advisable for when your child is still young, however once your child is older, you must select a home schooling program that is suited to his/her age group. The programs are available at the elementary, high school, and even college levels. You just have to search online for these various programs. One advantage of these programs is that you can tailor them to suit the requirements of your child. However, you have to see to it that all the lessons are followed by your child.

Once you and your child decide to give home schooling a go, you must be ready to endure some changes in your lifestyle. The educational will now take place in your home not at a remote school and through the various resources that you want to use, which should include a computer and the Internet.
