Muhammad Ali was 70 on January 17th, 2012. He was the most feared opponent in the boxing ring in his long and active career and with very good reason. He won the world heavy weight boxing championship three times after winning a gold medal at the Olympics and was named sportsman of the century by the BBC and Sports Illustrated.

Muhammad Ali was born in Louisville, Kentucky on January 17th, 1942 and was christened after his father Cassius Marcellus Clay. They added the handle Junior, to distinguish him from his father who was a billboard painter. In 1967, Cassius changed his name to Muhammad Ali and became a Muslim.

A local white Louisville police officer named Joe E. Martin was the first person to see that the young Clay had something extraordinary when he watched him fighting over a stolen bicycle as a twelve tear old. Martin encouraged Clay to go to the boxing ring with him. Martin and Clay trained together at Stoner’s Gym.

Martin and Ali used to do a show together called ‘Tomorrow’s Champions’. Stone was a useful coach for Ali and he remained his tutor for nearly all his amateur career (the last four years he was with Chuck Bodak).

As an amateur Ali won six Kentucky Golden Gloves, two National Golden Gloves, an Amateur Athletic Union title and the Gold Medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics for light-heavyweight boxing.

His record as an amateur was 100 wins and five losses. Ali was both hero-worshipped and vilified in his mother country. After Ali changed his name he refused to recognize the name Clay, saying that his family had been given it by slave-owners.

He was also accused of switching his religion to dodge the draft, but his well-known reply to that allegation was: “I ain’t got no quarrel with them Viet Cong… No Viet Cong ever called me nigger”. In 1966 he was barred from fighting in the United States. Ali was stripped of his boxing titles and his boxing license was suspended. So he fought abroad, frequently in the United Kingdom.

Ali’s first title fight was against Sonny Liston on February 25 1964, but it was nearly cancelled, because it became known that Ali had joined Malcolm X’s Nation of Islam. The promoter, Bill Faversham. was worried that that might spoil the attendance figures, because Ali was not considered likely to win anyway (7:1 against).

Ali agreed not to confirm that he had associations with Malcolm X until after the fight and it went ahead. At the weigh in, Ali’s pulse was 120 as opposed to his norm of 54 and his opponent’s team misinterpretted this as nerves. This was the time that Ali, the Louisville Lip, first said that he was going to “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”.

Ali saw his first professional defeat in 1971 against Joe Frazier, although he won the title back from George Foreman in 1974. This was the well-known ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ which was given political overtones.

It was ranked seventh in ‘The 100 Greatest Sporting Moments’. Ali’s fight against Chuck Wepner in 1975 motivated the film ‘Rocky’, which won the Academy Award.

Ali announced his retirement on June 27th 1979, but staged a comeback 18 months later in October 1980. He eventually retired in 1981, but before that the councillors of Louisville renamed Walnut Street ‘Muhammad Ali Boulevard’. A dozen of the seventy street signs were stolen within a week.

In 1984, Ali was diagnosed as having Altzeimer’s, which people who have head trauma are more prone to. Despite his illness, Ali has worked tirelessly for peace and equality and has represented America at several international peace negotiations.

He has won more prizes than anyone can possibly remember and established a $60 million not for profit centre in Louisville which houses his awards, but is there to promote peace, social responsibility, respect and personal growth.

On average, Ali travels over 200 days a year to raise money for and consciousness of poverty and hunger. It has been determined that he has helped supply more than 22,000,000 meals.

Angelo Dundee, Ali’s cornerman and trainer from 1960-1981 passed away on February 1st 2012 at the age of 90,

The subject of oriental Martial Arts is one of the most important presents of Asia to the world. Who will not bear in mind that Bruce Lee was first and foremost a martial arts sports person before becoming a movie star?

Martial arts pictures are a colossal hit with the ever-rising popularity of Asian cinema like ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ and ‘The House of the Flying Daggers’.

The Chinese are the first nation that come to mind if you think of such sports, but the Japanese are just as sporty with a rich heritage of body contact sports in their past. Modern Japan still gives honour to the martial arts by holding tournaments and promoting their martial arts in foreign countries.

Aikido is one of these. It is interesting to note the fact that the word comes from three Japanese characters from which is derived the one word. Ai means ‘joining’, Ki means ’spirit’ and Do means ‘manner’.

From this we can understand why Aikido lies beyond merely the physical skills of it students, particularly since its first proponent, Ueshiba, focused on the spiritual and philosophical improvement of his pupils.

In Aikido, one is not trained in violence instead, one is trained to be in harmony with the opponent so that you are able to defeat him more easily. This may seem strange but it really works.

When approaching an opponent, the objective of the Aikido practitioner is to become one with the adversary so as to become able to tackle him where he is weakest and in so doing, deflect or immobilize him, but never to slay him.

This is where Aikido becomes an art form. Art is something beautiful to look at and something helpful and Aikido is all that. At least one of the contestants concerned in the combat is looking for concord and concord can only be achieved if there is grace in the actions.

The moves might be premeditated, but there is an air of grace in performing these movements. Not a feminine grace, but a grace that emanates peace. The ‘art of peace’ is what they call it in Aikido.

It is one of the most affirmative influences of Aikido on its students and to everyone else who decides to learn about this Japanese martial art.

Some of the moves in Aikido involve the following:

Ikkyo is the first technique. Using this technique, you direct an opponent by using one hand to hold his elbow and one to hold near the wrist. This action is supposed to permit you to pin your opponent down to the ground.

Nikyo, the second technique, is when you perform a wrist lock which empowers you to twist the arm of your adversary which will in turn cause nerve pressure.

Sankyo, the third technique, is a process that creates upward-spiraling tension throughout the arm, elbow and shoulder. There are many other moves but the first three are enough to give you a fundamental idea.

When studying Aikido, it is crucial to remember that, together with building physical strength, you will have to improve your mind to become able to overpower your antagonist. Just| like in any other art form, it takes a lot of training and discipline to reach the summit of the art of Aikido.

The vital thing to keep in mind is that anyone who wants to get into the art must have the resolve to give honour to the art by performing it in the best manner that they can.

People tend to think of martial arts as being oriental, Kung Fu sort fighting. However, the word ‘martial’ derives from the Latin word ‘mars, martis’, who was the Roman god of war. ‘Martial’, consequently, means ‘to do with war or fighting’. As a result, martial can refer to Western methods of fighting too such as boxing and wrestling.

These martial arts have been around for thousands of years at least and originated on the battlefield where one’s competence in fighting was literally a matter of life and death. Wrestling was in the Olympic Games more than 2,000 years ago.

Likewise, many of the oriental martial arts are equally old and came about because peasants were not permitted to bear arms in the social structures of the times.

In spite of the age of these martial arts, they did not become popular in the West until Bruce Lee made them popular with his Kung Fu films in the early Seventies. It is a little known fact that when Lee was dispatched to America at the age of 18 to avoid the wrath of a local Hong Kong mafia chief, he wanted to teach traditional martial arts, but was forbidden authorization by the local Chinese community.

There was an unwritten law that non-Chinese were not to be taught Chinese martial arts. Lee ignored the rule, and he claimed to have received death threats from powerful Chinese gangland leaders from America and Hong Kong. Lee taught martial arts to a small group of well-known Caucasians and even invented his own style known as Jeet Kune Do.

Jeet Kune Do used Lee’s amazing speed and power in its moves. Three of Lee’s most famous moves were:

The Power Side Kick: with one kick, he could kick a 300 pound sack to hit a standard ceiling

The One Inch Punch: he could knock a trained fighter over with a punch that had travelled only one inch

The Lightning Snatch: with his arm by his side, he could snatch a dime from an open palm three feet away and leave a penny behind in 5/100 ths of a second.

Individuals wanted to be able to do the same. However, there are many different sorts of martial arts and many countries have their own peculiar style of fighting.

China has Judo and Kung Fu; Japan has Karate; Brazil has Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; Thailand has Muay Thai.. There are many other, usually oriental styles, too, like Tae Kwando and Aikido but also French Kick Boxing.

Some martial arts are more defensive in character, but others are definitely aggressive.: Judo and Aikido are examples of defensive styles and Karate and boxing are much more aggressive in character. However, all martial arts teach self-control and the students develop more self-confidence.

Martial arts are experiencing a resurgence in popularity at the moment, mainly due to UFC fights or mixed martial arts. You may not approve of the violence of mixed martial arts, but it cannot be denied that many kids are learning a couple of martial arts, Western and Oriental, because of these popular TV fights.

Martial Arts are more popular in the West than ever before, but which one should you decide on to study, if that is what you have decided to do? There have always been masters of the traditional, ancient, martial arts have set up their own styles.

Aikido and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are instances of this, but now it seems as if more sensei are trying to set up their own disciplines than ever. Look at Bruce Lee’s own particular style and Gracie Jiu Jitsu.

This makes it even more difficult than ever to decide on which martial art to learn or indeed, whether to train in the fantastically well-liked sport of Mixed Martial Arts, which is actually contested by fighters who have studied a number of martial arts.

There have been contests to find out which is the best martial art for more than a hundred years but the panel of judges is still out. Some times one discipline wins and other times another one does.

Maybe it relies on the ability of the fighter rather than the sport itself. Muhammad Ali with boxing won the championship known as Kings of the Square Ring in around 1980.

Maybe the first thing to do is enquire of yourself why you would like to learn a martial art in the first place. All fighting styles will teach self-defence, self-confidence and self-discipline and they will all allow you the chance never to get bullied in unarmed combat again whether it is in school, in a bar or on the street.

You should also examine your self and your body type. Some combative arts are extremely athletic. Look at the jumps and high kicks in Tae Kwon Do, whilst other styles are a little more laid back like Jiu Jitsu and Judo, because they teach you to utilize your opponent’s energy to win an advantage.

Karate and Kung Fu require fast reflexes. Bruce Lee could stand three feet from a person who had a coin on his open palm; raise his hand from his side, take the coin and replace it with another one in 5/100 ths of a second.

Not everyone is going to be able to train hard enough to do that, but I suspect that not all body kinds would allow it anyway.

It is a good idea to rent a couple of DVD’s on the different fighting styles and attempt to work out what appeals to you personally. If you find that you like a number of of them, why not go down to a local dojo that instructs mixed martial arts?

The instructors there will be less prejudiced in favour of one skill and will have experience with different body kinds and temperaments.

Make certain you spend some time choosing a reputable gym or dojo to go to for advice. Most places will give you an interview and a free first lesson. If you explain your quandary, they are certain to be able to help you come to the right decision about choosing the best martial arts style for you.

Mixed martial arts is a blend of any martial arts. There is no set combination, you can learn whichever techniques you like and call yourself a mixed martial artist. The techniques that you should learn depend on your mental attitude, body shape and personal preferences. Local availability may take precedence over these reasons though. We will look at some of the most popular styles below.

Kick Boxing: there are various styles of kick boxing including a French and a Thai version called Muay Thai. Kick boxing is a full contact sport which makes use of the fists, elbows, feet and knees to hit the opponent. There are frequent clinches, but the bout is stopped when a fighter falls to the canvas as in boxing.

Thai kick boxing is one of the most well-liked styles in a mixed martial artist’s repertoire, particularly among women fighters, because it takes immense suppleness.

Boxing: boxing is the most popular western martial art. It was practiced in Ancient Greece and was a sport in the early Olympic Games. You may just use your fists. Boxing skills benefit the stronger upper bodied athlete. Boxing has to be combined with mat skills such as wrestling or the MMA fighter will be disadvantaged on the canvas.

Judo: judo is basically a defensive skill and is the first oriental martial art that most individuals learn. It is a good style to start learning oriental fighting skills, but you will also have to learn some hostile manoeuvres.

Wrestling: wrestling is not instructed to young men as much as boxing any more, but it is a very well-liked spectator sport. There are various types of wrestling such as normal western wrestling and Japanese Sumo. It is indispensable to have some wrestling-type skills for when you are grappling on the canvas.

Jiu Jitsu: jiu jitsu is indispensable for MMA, most fighters would say. There are a number of styles, besides the original one, called Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and an offshoot of that known as Gracie Jiu Jitsu.

These last two types are the most prevalent in MMA. Jiu Jitsu is aggressive and defensive and includes stand-up fighting and grappling on the canvas. It is an outstanding all-round martial art.

Karate: another Japanese martial art that involves strength and speed. Karate is also useful for vertical and horizontal combative manoeuvres and so is more adaptable than boxing. It is a full contact sport in some disciplines, but not in others, because it is risky to hit an untrained person using karate – it can be lethal.

Tae Kwando: tae kwando takes enormous suppleness and lightening-fast reflexes. It is also more popular with female MMA fighters as many of the men are too weighty to carry out the jumps and aerial attacks that are common in this martial art. The octagon may also be a little too cramped to carry out all the manoeuvres of tae kwando properly as well.

In competitive combat, it is normal for both fighters in the ring to be using the same martial art, be that sumo, boxing or judo. Both fighters will have spent years studying the same techniques and adapting them to suit themselves, but what would occur if a wrestler were pitted with a karate fighter?

In fact, bouts of this form were popular in the late Nineteen Century. There have been a couple resurgences since then, but they never regained the public’s attention again until mixed martial arts started in the mid Nineteen Nineties.

Mixed martial artists endeavour to gain an advantage by learning a number of styles of fighting. The most popular styles are: boxing, wrestling, karate and Brazilian jiu jitsu. The more techniques you know, the more chance you have of surprising your opponent and overpowering him.

Of course, it takes far longer to learn three or four martial arts well than it does to learn one well. It takes great fitness to be a professional fighter and total dedication, but even more so to be a mixed martial artist. You could go as far as to say, that you need to dedicate your life to fighting, if you want to win competitions in MMA.

Changing a standard lifestyle takes immense self-sacrifice and absolute dedication, but it is not only the fighter who suffers for his or her art, their friends and family do too. There will not be too many boozy parties and all night revelling for the professional fighter and the diet will have to be stringent. In order to help the fighter keep to his diet, he may ban some foods like chocolate and beer from the house completely.

The family of an MMA fighter may hardly see their loved one, as he could easily spend more time in the gym than he does awake in the house. Couple this with needing plenty of sleep and you have one very busy individual indeed.

A fat individual can get thin, but that does not mean that a slow person can get agile. Faster, yes, but truly fast reflexes are probably born with you. Lighter-framed individuals tend to be faster than big-framed people. This does not preclude anyone from learning any martial art but it might have a big influence on how good he may be in sure disciplines.

Tae Kwando is famous for its aerial attacks and high jumps. That would be hard for an 18 stone man, whereas that size and weight would favour a wrestler or a boxer. In martial arts training, you learn to make the most of what you have and do not try to be what you are not.

Financial cost is the least price of training to be good at mixed martial arts, think more about mental self-discipline and time for working out to say nothing of what it will cost your family in terms of backing.

All individuals should know how to protect themselves. They always used to, especially before the introduction of the police force. Before there was a police force, there was turmoil and it was every man for himself. Men protected themselves and their family from all kinds of thieves, muggers and rapists for millenia usually with a sword or a cane.

There is a lot less violence on the streets now than there was 200 years ago, but there is still too much and so lots of people still feel the need to be able to defend themselves. Lots of people turn to martial arts and the best time to take up martial arts is while you are young.

And this is going on as well. Numerous parents are afraid for three reasons: 1] that their children will experience bullying at school 2] that they will be harassed on the streets by predators or 3] that they will become overweight. Martial arts are the best solution to all these fears. Practicing martial arts can expend 300-450 calories per hour.

But the advantages of learning martial arts do not stop there. Martial arts has a normalizing effect on individuals. It raises the self-confidence of the introverted and timid, but it also teaches bullies that there is always someone better too. It teaches self-disciple, self-defence and self-confidence. It makes the weak robust and the fat thin. It is a life coach.

If your child wants to study a martial art or indeed mixed martial arts, the first thing to do is choose which style is the one for the child. You could start doing this by looking at videos on the differen styles. Not films with stories where everything is sketched, but documentary films.

The foremost ones to look at are: boxing, wrestling, karate, muay Thai, tae kwon do, jiu jitsu and judo. There are others, but it is best to find a general type first, because some require more speed, energy, nimbleness or strength than others. Some mental and physical attributes are more suitable to one discipline than another.

Once you have a style in mind, you can start looking for a gym or dojo that instructs it. Check out the safety record and the facilities of any that you fancy and talk to the trainers. It is also important that your child will get able to go to the groups, so you will want a dojo that is open after school hours and most of the weekend. Most of them are, but it is worth asking.

It is practical if the dojo will give private lessons to students who either fall behind or who are better than their colleagues. Once into the sport, you child might decide that he or she would rather have done a different one, check to see if that is possible without losing what you have already paid in advance charges.

Each child should get encouraged, but not forced, to at least try a martial art, because it will give them a practical interest for life that will make their hearts, minds and bodies strong for life.

Mixed martial arts is greatly popular now. It is as well-liked as wrestling was in the Seventies and Eighties. The difference is that everybody knew that wrestling was sketched, whereas mixed martial arts (some fans call it cage fighting) is not. Mixed martial arts is for real and for very high stakes comparable to those of world championship heavy weight boxing championships.

Mixed martial arts or MMA used to be entirely unregulated and that put many individuals off in the late Eighties and Nineties, but now that there are safety rules (some, anyway), this extreme sport has become more popular. There are now two types of MMA though, sport and street. The former is more governed than the latter where almost anything goes.

Despite the increasing popularity of mixed martial arts, there is still no real governing body for the sport, although there are quite a number of organizations vying for the privilege on both sides of the Atlantic. Britain has at least three companies trying to become the regulator of MMA in the UK. The USA roughly the same.

One of the top organizers of MMA fights, if not the top organizer, is Ultimate Fighting Championship or UFC. They put on pay-per-view bouts on cable television which can pay top fighters nearly a million dollars a bout! This merely goes to show how well-liked mixed martial arts has become.

Apart from proceeds from pay-per-view and national TV, there is a huge amount being taken from spin-offs like videos, DVD’s and T-shirts. There are also figurines, dolls and board games to say nothing of documentaries and books. Web sites on mixed martial arts abound as do blogs and forums. Most contestants also have Twitter and Facebook sites.

This has provoked young people of both sexes to join a gym and take up martial arts. This can only be a good move. Training frequently will counteract the trend in Western children towards obesity and will also help confront bullying and street violence. Trained fighters seldom turn into bullies or muggers.

The craze for MMA appears to be fairly recent, but that is not true. Inter-disciplinary martial arts fighting was well-liked in the 1890’s in Europe. Then there was the documentary film ‘Kings of the Square Ring’ featuring Muhammad Ali in around 1980. The modern craze took off in the early Nineties, but it is in full swing now.

Mixed martial arts, or pankration, was an Olympic sport 2,000 years ago and supporters tried to reinstate it as such in 2004, although the movement failed, but who knows what the future will bring about? Many powerful legislators consider that the sport is too violent and that it needs to be regulated more closely. The fans and the fighters disagree, so we will have to wait and see which opinion wins out.

Have you ever seen a mixed martial arts bout? There are plenty of mixed martial arts (MMA) bouts on television, but in some countries, most of them are on Pay-Per-View (PPV). MMA is a very brutal and hard-hitting sport in which almost anything goes. Most of the bouts in America are organized by the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

MMA began about 2,000 years ago when it was a sport in the early Olympic Games. It passed out of the games for some unknown explanation, but it found a renaissance in Europe in the late Nineteenth Century.

Again, it passed out, but returned with the Kings of the Square Ring in which Muhammad Ali took part in about 1980.

Again, MMA, which it was not called then, waned. In those earlier matches, the idea was to find out which was the best martial art, so they would put a boxer against a wrestler or a boxer against an aficionado of karate. In the early 1990’s, the emphasis shifted to finding out who was the best fighter, not which was the best discipline.

Fighters were allowed to use any methods they knew. ‘Vale Todo’ (‘Everything Goes’) from Brazil was important in this expansion. In fact, many if not most of the contemporary MMA fighters have trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The Gracie family from Brazil was (and still is) central to MMA.

In the Nineties, there were no rules to speak of and everything went. Astonishingly, this appeared to hamper MMA’s rise in popularity, because as more rules were added to (slightly) limit the brutality, so MMA has boomed.

MMA is still very aggressive and brutal and fractured limbs are not uncommon. Luckily, the death rate in the ring is way below that of some other martial arts like boxing, in which fighters concentrate more on the head than the body.

In contemporary Mixed martial arts, a fighter is allowed to use his or her body as a weapon according to any discipline they have learned. Most top fighters have learned three of four and are still learning more.

The most popular starting point seems to be Brazilian jiu jitsu, followed by boxing, wrestling, Thai boxing, karate, judo and aikido.

Because there are so many martial arts disciplines, it means that no two fighters are likely to have the same style. This has the potential to make MMA more interesting than say, boxing, because MMA includes boxing, but boxing is just boxing.

Wrestling damaged the image of TV bouts with its silly, choreographed dances called fights. It did not fool many fans and it was more of a joke than a serious sport. MMA is categorically not the same.

It is not choreographed, although a branch of scripted MMA may form, who knows? The sport is still in its experimental days, despite having such ancient beginnings. Maybe it will even be a sport in the Olympic Games again.

Everyone knows that you have to train to learn how to do something better. This goes for playing tennis, writing, playing chess and martial arts. Especially in aggressive sports like martial arts, because you can get hurt, if you are not more proficient than your opponent. The most fierce kind of martial art is mixed martial arts.

Mixed martial arts incorporates all the other martial arts, so it permits the fighter to use the best moves from all the martial arts he or she knows. This has the effect that it is unlikely that any two fighters will have precisely the same styles even if they have the same instructors. In order to train in the correct manner, it is vital to use the correct clothing, safety gear and tools or weapons.

In fact, man-made weapons are not allowed in mixed martial arts, you allowed to only use your body and limbs. However, there are also training devices like punch ball, punch bag and blocking pads. However, exactly what you need, depends on which martial arts you use in your mode of mixed martial arts.

Most pupils of mixed martial arts learn judo, Brazilian jiu jitsu, boxing, karate and wrestling. Some also learn aikido, kung fu and tae kwon do. This first thing that you will require is a gi, if you are practicing a traditional Eastern martial art.

The gi is the well-known white judo jacket, trousers and belt. Do not try to save money on these garments as they require to be tough to withstand grapples and throws that would tear low-priced clothing.

Women will require an equally tough training bra and men will require a box for lower protection. In mixed martial arts, it is usual to wear open fingered gloves. These permit the fighter to grip the adversary and supply protection from minor cuts and scratches, while not encumbering in the least. Therefore, they require to be totally flexible.

The punch bag is fantastic for a serious cardio work out. It ought to weigh at least 100 pounds and be five-six feet long by 12-18 inches in diameter. You can fill it with sand and hang it from a rafter in the garage so that it roughly resembles an adversary. The punch bag is ideal for developing weighty punches and fast kicks.

The fighters in mixed martial arts bouts wear shorts not the gi, so women wear a sports bra and most men wear a box too. These items of clothing should be sturdy because your opponent will use them to throw you, so you cannot afford to stint on these garments.

It is sensible to protect your teeth by wearing a gum-shield and, in training at least, you ought to wear a helmet. It is best to get approval for the type of protective gear that you are thinking of wearing particularly if you are new to mixed martial arts.

These easiest place to shop for these items and the equipment that you will need is probably in your gym as they will make certain that it is up to the necessary quality. When you understand what you require, you will find it less expensive to shop for it online.
