Reflexology – A different Form Of Massage Therapy

Numerous people do not realize it, but reflexology is a different form of massage albeit a very localized one to the feet. Reflexology is also integrated into some other forms of massage including Thai massage, Shiatsu and other Ayurvedic massage techniques.

Basically, reflexology is the application of pressure and massage to small fields of the feet in order to affect other parts of the body, like say, the heart or other internal organs. Reflexologists think that all areas of the body have connections with the feet.

Reflexology sounds like a new, Third Age word, but reflexology is really an ancient art. Looking at ancient murals in burial chambers, it seems that reflexology was being carried out in Japan in 690 BC, in Egypt in 2330 BC and in China in 2704 BC.

And why ought it not to have been? There is nothing more natural than to fancy a foot rub when you have been on your feet all day. This may begin with washing the feet to remove dust, perspiration and foot odour; followed by the application of sweet-smelling oils or powders; followed my the rub.

As it works out, that is precisely the same sequence of activities employed in reflexology. This process is sometimes applied to the hands as well and some people find that it is soothing on the ears as well, but this is not true reflexology.

Reflexologists maintain that the feet are connected to each organ and part of the body, so they can manipulate the other parts from the feet without having to contact them – a bit like using a radio control handset.

They claim to be able to alleviate digestive disorders, backache, menstrual problems, headaches and the like, because our stress degrees are controlled by the tension in our feet, which can be caused by tension elsewhere in the body too.

So, an example may be: a bad back might cause the heel of your right foot to ache and if you can quit the heel of your right foot aching, your backache will disappear too. However, if you have any medical conditions, you should tell the reflexologist before he or she begins. Pregnancy is also something you ought to notify them of.

Not everyone in the Western world is convinced by the claims for reflexology in the same manner that they are not convinced about acupuncture, however it is not at all painful and is very soothing after standing up or walking all day.

Having said that, a good foot rub or massage does help get the blood coursing out of the feet and legs and back to the heart, so it is frequently used in hospitals for patients recovering from operations and for those who have spent a long time in bed.

This kind of massage is performed fully clothed, except for shoes and socks, sitting in a comfortable chair and normally lasts 30-60 minutes. It is a firm favourite with women shoppers and shop assistants and fits into a luncheon hour just nicely.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is at present concerned with the massage therapy school online. If you have an interest in massage, please go over to our web site now at Classes For Massage Therapy

West Nile Virus And Where It Comes From

It came as a huge shock to the health department in New York in August 1999, that they were facing an epidemic of West Nile Virus in the capital city of the United States. This is not remarkable, because it was the first time that WNV had been encountered in the USA.

In fact, it was such a shock that scientists first thought the outbreak to be St Louis Encephalitis or even a terrorist attack of some form using a virus.

However, they soon spotted it as WNF and placed the blame on the mosquito species of the area. That was in 1999 and every year since, the threat of the disease raises its head again.

WNV can kill, but it is not apt to, particularly if one is aware of the threat and the symptoms and seeks help as soon as possible.

There are a number of mosquitoes that can spread this infection, but the main one is almost certainly Culex pipiens molestus, which is probably a new variant of the pipiens mosquito which was thought to only attack birds.

Pipiens is now primarily responsible for St. Louis Encephalitis and West Nile Virus in humans; Western Equine Encephalitis (in horses); Heartworm in dogs and bird malaria.

Despite this impressive list of illnesses, it is normally referred to as ‘the house mosquito’, which seems to make light of the risk that it can carry. No one knows why it altered its behaviour from only birds to include man, horses and dogs.

It is considered that C. pipiens fist bites an infected bird and then bites a mammalian host, where the bird’s infection changes itself into something that can infect its new host. In this light, pipiens can be seen as a link between birds and mammals.

C. pipiens is the most prevalent mosquito in north-eastern cities in the USA and wherever it is, you can guarantee that stagnant water is not far away. Not that it has to be a lot. A single female can lay 400 eggs in a half inch of water in one day.

Therefore, if you would like to reduce your likelihood of being bitten by this (or any) mosquito, demolish their breeding grounds near your house. These include, but are not limited to: tin bins, buckets, old tyres, untended bird baths, clogged rain gutters, plastic wading pools, storm drains and catch basins, septic tanks and other foul water sources above or below ground.

If you have a water feature in your garden, populate it with guppies or goldfish, because these fish are known to like eating mosquito larvae. At the end of the year, spray your tool shed, garage and cellar, because they will hibernate to escape dying in the frost if they can find somewhere suitable

In fact, the last generation of adult females mate and lay down body fat by feeding on carbohydrates before finding somewhere to overwinter. Their body metabolism slows significantly and winter is spent in a state of virtual sleep. Females that survive the winter take a blood meal in the spring and lay eggs that start the summer populations.

What If Humans Were Poisonous To Mosquitoes?

There is a way of turning humans poisonous to mosquitoes. In fact, scientists and doctors have suspected that it was possible to make us poisonous to mosquitoes for 25 years, but there has not been enough proof to confirm it. Now scientists are more certain of the idea.

The drug that is so poisonous to mosquitoes is to be found in a relatively cheap tablet that has been used for deworming for 25 years. These tablets are passed out to populations who are at risk of river blindness (Onchocerciasis) which is caused by infection by Onchocerca volvulus – a parasitic roundworm found in fast-flowing rivers mainly in Central and West Africa.

The drug, called ivermectin or Mectizan, that kills the worms also kills mosquitoes, but it has a quite short effective time span, which is one of the reasons why its usefulness for controlling mosquitoes has long been suspected but never confirmed.

There is a problem though – there just has to be one, does there not? The use of ivermectin to control mosquito populations can only be truly effective if everyone in the region begins taking the pills at the same time and continues taking them. The pills are effective for about a month, so everybody in a whole village would have to take a pill on, say, the first of each month.

This does not seem like much of a difficulty, but scientists, doctors and aid workers say that it is in fact a nightmare attempting to get a thousand or even thousands of individuals to follow an annual campaign against such a significant threat as river blindness.

The drug itself has been in use against river blindness for 25 years already so it is known to be safe, although it can cause death in very rare cases. Therefore, safety is not an an issue and villagers are not frightened of taking it.

The latest studies were carried out by scientists from Senegal and Colorado State University and their findings were published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. The piece reports that the scientists vacuumed the mosquitoes off the walls of huts in three villages where individuals had consumed ivermectin and three where they had not.

There were 80% fewer malarial mosquitoes in the villages where the residents had taken ivermectin. This is because the drug was killing the mosquitoes off at a far earlier age than is typical and it is normally only older mosquitoes that carry malaria as they have to get infected by a human host first.

Although the drug is quite cheap, at the moment it is handed out one time a year during the worst season for the parasitic roundworm that causes river blindness. If it were to become used successfully to control mosquitoes, it would have to be distributed a dozen times more often, which would present a huge drain on all resources financial, distributional and human.

Another objection to this method of treatment for mosquitoes is that to do it properly, everyone would have to be screened for infection by loa loa worms, because the drug also kills them, but as they die they can clog tiny blood vessels which can lead to coma and death. This would mean drawing blood from millions and millions of individuals and testing for loa loa.

Mosquitoes In The North-Eastern United States

Were you aware that Eastern Equine Encephalitis can be transmitted to humans? It is rare, but mosquitoes can give humans EEE and at least one inhabitant of Middleborough can corroborate it. What is more EEE is worse for humans than West Nile Virus, which is spread by the same species of mosquito in the North East of the United States.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis attacks the brain and the nervous system and frequently either kills of leaves its victim in significant trouble.

The one man who is known to have been contaminated with EEE in NE America in August 2010, is still in an invalid chair a year afterward and there is no anticipated end to his pain.

The health authorities in close by Plymouth and Bristol counties where there were also lots of these mosquitoes (Culex pipiens) last year have warned that this could be a bad year for them too.

They warned householders to begin on home defence by repairing broken and damaged fly screens now. They have also suggested clearing up mosquitoes’ breeding grounds.

This involves up-turning any containers that could hold water for them to breed in. Do not forget that a mosquito just requires a half inch of water to lay 400 eggs. Drill holes in flower pots and old tyres so that they cannot hold water any longer.

Old tyres are cited as one of the foremost reasons for the increase of mosquitoes and the spreading of new species.

The next couple of weeks are the linchpin of how many mosquitoes will be around later in the summer and autumn. The more you exterminate now, the fewer there will be to breed further generations and mosquitoes can breed a new generation roughly every month.

That is 1×400x400×400 mosquitoes each quarter for each mosquito that escapes. A great-grandmother mosquito can become responsible for 64 million offspring each quarter!

These mosquitoes (C. pipiens) breed in water, but hang out in damp, dark undergrowth, so you could spray in there as well. Some local authorities have been out spraying the parks and verges, but you can do your bit by taking control of your own micro-environment – your backyard, shed and garage.

EEE has not been seen this year in the North East so far, but West Nile Virus has been observed twice already. The weather has been ideal for mosquitoes – rain followed by warm weather.

The indications of West Nile and Easter Equine resemble those of flu. The difference is that around 1% of those with WNF might die, but far more with EEE will probably die. Around a third will suffer permanent brain injury

People are worried by last year’s experience. For example, the authorities in Plymouth County have already received almost 10,000 requests to spray against mosquitoes. This situation can only become worse unless residents help by checking their gardens and close by waste ground for likely breeding sites and destroying them. But it is not easy, mosquitoes can breed in a waste potato chip packet, so refuse becomes a big issue too.

The Fight Against Mosquitoes Around The World

Winnipeg has long been Canada’s mosquito first city, but Edmonton is challenging it this year. At the moment, mosquito traps in Edmonton are catching five times more mosquitoes that those in Winnipeg. Rainy periods followed by warm weather are blamed for the huge rise in the number of these annoying insects.

Inhabitants of Edmonton are asking for a substantial increase in the budget to combat the mosquito populace which can carry West Nile Virus. West Nile Virus delivers symptoms similar to a severe bout of flu, although older and younger victims have passed away from epidemics. County health officials are considering spraying public areas before official public festivals to reduce the incidence of biting.

On the other side of the world, in Sidney, Australia, the parks department has also started its anti-mosquito spraying program and inhabitants are invited to call in to be added to a ‘no spray’ list, if they fear the toxicity of the insect spray. It is thought that most individuals will prefer having their block and backyard sprayed as the numbers of mosquitoes are rising there as well.

However, the spraying plan has always proved a success in the past and will like continue to be so. This year it will be supplemented by poisoning ponds and lakes with larvacide, which is a more practical kind of control adding fish to the ponds that eat mosquito larvae would be an even better manner. The tablets are called Altosid and last for 30 days, although they are also considering using XR which works for 150 days.

West Nile Virus is also a difficulty in Sidney, although there have not been any recorded cases yet. This means nothing though as most individuals who get WNF think that they have a summer cold. The city health authorities say that they are continuing to trap mosquitoes and carry out autopsies on dead birds to get an early notification of a likely WNV epidemic.

The city health department is warning all those over 50 years of age and those with a weakened immune system to take extra care by using a repellent including DEET, picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oil on bare skin and by wearing long trousers and long-sleeved shirts at dusk and at dawn.

They are also suggesting doing basic maintenance and repairs about the home and garden. In particular, fly screens should be repaired and all stagnant water ought to be drained. They advise drilling holes in any old tyres and bins that can retain water, because mosquitoes just require a half inch of water to breed.

In the meantime, in the States, anti-mosquito activity is also being pursued. It appears that wherever you go in the world, the local authorities are trying to do something about the number of mosquitoes. Do they know something that we don’t?

Like in Sidney and Edmonton, they too are worried about the Developed world Nile Virus which appears to have people running afraid all over the world.

In Jacksonville, they are also recommending that individuals remove the mosquito’s breeding grounds from gardens and garbage ground by up-turning any container that could hold water after rainfall. They also recommend unblocking drains and gutters.

They warn about keeping your animals safe from Eastern Equine Encephalitis during dawn and dusk and keeping yourself protected by wearing long clothing at dawn and dusk. Finally, they say to rub DEET on all bare areas of skin.

Dog Friendly Rentals

The majority of people really love their pets, to the point where they become part of the family. Some pet owners cannot bear to be parted from their pets for more than a day or so and for these people, going on holiday can be a problem, because they do not want to leave their friends behind. Clearly the answer is to take your cat or dog with you. Dogs are easier to take away than cats, because they are more well-trained

If you are only going for a couple of days, say on business, finding a hotel near to the place of your meeting should not be too much of a problem, unless you want to stay at one of the big names in the city centre. It is usually the smaller, family-run hotels or guest houses that consent to pets, although some want you to keep your dog in a kennel on the premises overnight. larger hotels are inclined not to be very pet-friendly.

If you propose taking your pet with you, it is best if you make this apparent when you make your booking as more hotels do not permit pets than do allow them. Normally there is no extra charge for a pet, but you are responsible for any extra cleaning bills, should your pet have an accident.

If you are going away on vacation or for a longer period of time, it is sometimes far easier to find a holiday rental that will allow you to take your cat or dog with you. Again, it is best to make it obvious at booking that you want to take your dog with you. Fortunately, there are about fifty percent of rentals or more that will allow this, although once again, you will be held liable for any damage or mess made by your dog.

A tip: if on getting there, you see that previous pets have caused some damage or stains, take photographs on your first day and have them dated. Modern cameras often have the facility to date stamp photos or you can use a newspaper. Otherwise, point out the damage to your host.

When you travel with your dog, it is best to put the animal in some sort of a kennel especially when driving. A loving dog can be a distraction in a car. If it wants attention just when you are trying to complete a complicated manouevre, it can result in an accident. Some dogs get very frightened in cars and want to sit on their owner’s lap, this is also not a good idea and could lead to a charge of dangerous driving. Furthermore, if your dog is not caged and you have an accident, it could be thrown through the windscreen. If you are travelling by air, then the airline will insist on a cage, but they usually have their own.

Once you arrive at your pet-friendly rental, give your dog some of his regular food to eat, spread out his blanket from home, and put out one of his favourite toys, just to help make him feel at home. After all, everything will be strange to him and he might be able to smell the previous furry tenant. If cleaning staff will be going into your rental during your holiday, make sure that you are there at least for the first few times they visit.

Recreating The Beauty Of Moroccan Decor

Moroccan furniture is normally solid timber and stylish. Morocco is an ex-French colony, but it is very near Spain too. In fact, two small parts of Morocco, Melilla and Ceuta are still under Spanish control.

This means that Moroccan furnishings and decor has Berba, Arabic, French and Spanish influences. These Mediterranean influences are prominent in traditional and contemporary Moroccan furniture.

When combined with Moroccan decor and colours, Moroccan furniture can transform your home. Walls are normally emulsioned plain white or cream and lightly decorated with old carpets or tapestries with one or two photos or paintings hanging between them.

Reds and browns are the principal colours. Poignant writings from the Koran or other Arabic philosophers are often written out in bold script and framed.

Moroccan decorations such as lamps, lanterns, mirrors, benches, vases, mosaic end tables, ottomans, rugs and ceramics can add that remarkable local flavour to the decor, setting off the solid timber or padded cloth furniture.

Pillows and cushions feature large in Moroccan interior and garden decor, but they also use sofas and seats in the European manner. Morocco is well-known for its leather craft and leather is frequently used to cover chairs, sofas and footstools or poufes.

Loose rugs are important for sitting on and they are taken out and beaten each day to keep them clean as Morocco is a hot, sandy and dusty country if you travel a few miles inland from the coast. Camels are still used for transport in rural parts and camel hair is woven into rugs, blankets and wall coverings.

Moroccans like tiles and mosaics and Arabic style tiles are quite distinctive if you want to use them in your bathroom and kitchen. If you want to dine in Moroccan style, they usually dine at a very low round table with the main dish in the centre from which everybody helps themselves, although in a family, some members will feed others too.

Following tradition and hygiene, you may only touch food with your right hand, although everybody will have washed both hands before coming to the table. Bread, rice and couscous feature extensively in Moroccan food as does potatoes, carrots, lamb and chicken.Water is served during the meal and tea and coffee afterwards frequently with very sweet cakes covered with icing sugar and syrup.

People take it easy at home wearing long, loose-fitting garments and lounge on benches or on rugs on the floor surrounded by cushions. In the evening, lighting will be low offered by low wattage bulbs concealed behind red and brown stained glass or cloth. Candles, scented or not also feature a great deal in living rooms and bedrooms unless someone wants a stronger light to read by.

Candles in wall sconces are common methods to highlight special areas and light up corridors and some doorways. Frequently these sconces do not hold candles, but hold scented oil with a floating wick which is less expensive to leave burning between the hours or twilight and bed time.

How To Use Relaxing Bathroom Accessories

Most individuals like soaking in the bath, even those individuals who say that you can not get clean in a bath. It is very relaxing, but there are some things that can increase your enjoyment of relaxing in the bath. Most of these accessories for relaxing in the bath are good for Jacuzzis. hot tubs, spas and regular baths.

The first thing that helps make a bath more relaxing is bubble bath. You ought to not use bubble bath in a hot tub – hot spa with a filter, because it can block up the filter, but bath salts are a good alternative to bubble bath. A waterproof pillow also assists you unwind in the bath.

Aromatic bath salts or bubble bath can have a very hypnotic effect, so make certain that you do not fall asleep, particularly if you are indulging in my second favourite manner of relaxing in the bath. I like to have a few glasses of red wine in the bath, but in that case you have to be very cautious not to fall asleep, especially if you have had a hard day.

If you like a romantic bath alone or with a friend, candles are the way to go. Get the large, thick candles so that they will not burn down or fall over. Candles can be perilous if you do not stand them on candle holders or loose tiles, which is why I advocate thick candles. Again they can be aromatic.

Many of people like to listen to music in the bath, but be cautious of using anything that necessitates mains power whilst you are in the water. It is better to use a battery powered or rechargeable unit for replaying your music.

If you have a spare CD player, you could build it into an outdoor hot tub and run it off the mains for the pump, but just put it out of reach of the Jacuzzi. Use a remote if you want to control it. Bathing in the garden is excellent, but we can not all manage that.

You can recreate an outdoor atmosphere by putting potted plants in the bathroom. Some plants do not like a lot of light, but do like a humid atmosphere. Some orchids fall into this bracket, but there ought to be plenty of others too – merely enquire at your garden centre.

Mirrors are sexy in the bathroom and will help the room look bigger and more full or candles and plants. The bathroom is frequently the smallest room in the house, so a couple mirrors will help create it look bigger.

If you are in a regular bath indoors in the bathroom, you could fit a bubble mat. It is like a shower mat, but it pumps air and recycles water through holes in it, making it react a little like a hot tub spa. A bath bubble mat is no substitute for a spa, but it is better than nothing and is quite cheap.

Superb Inland Beach Cottage Rentals

When many people, singles and families alike, think about booking a holiday, many of them would only think about going to the beach for a fortnight’s lounging on the beach under the sun and swimming in warm, azure waters.

However, many of the best, most famous beach locations are magnets for crowds of people. It appears that most people like the sand, the sea and the sun. Now some people go to these destinations specifically because they are busy. They like the crowds and the night clubs that appeal to them. Mainly singles go to these kinds of places and a holiday affair is not far from many peoples’ minds.

Couples and older people may desire a little less noise, pollution and commotion. However, there are beaches which meet these requirements too. Often they are private beaches. Some have hotels on them but some do not. Those that do not often have inland beach cottage rental properties instead. These are nearly always self-catering.

When most people think of a beach it is automatically connected with the sea. However, this need not inevitably be so. There are also inland beaches on lakes and rivers. These beaches are usually referred to as inland beaches. Accommodation can be a problem with even some of the best inland beaches.

Many of these inland beaches are just not well-known enough to make a hotel commercially viable, but some of them have cottage rentals as an alternative. These cottages, or cabins sometimes, can be hard to find if you do not reserve early enough. They are frequently complete homes, fully equipped with all the household amenities you have grown used to: a fully furnished living room, multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, and a modern kitchen.

Inland beach cottage rentals are popular because they are often located exactly on the water’s edge. This makes the bit of beach right in front of your cottage your private beach. You can sleep on it at night if it’s hot, lie there all day or set up a few fishing lines.

In the evenings, you can hitch up with neighbours to have a party or keep yourself to yourself. For this reason, it is a good idea to check photos of the cottage before you make a booking.

If an inland beach cottage rental sounds right for you, there are thousands to pick from in the United States and Canada. The Great Lakes are a particularly beautiful place to go. There are excellent spots in the Finger Lakes region of New York state and along Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

You will not be disappointed about going on holiday to an inland beach cottage rental property. There are so many variations that there is certainly something for every wallet and every family size. Singles are not so well catered for, but if you want a quiet holiday alone. maybe to study, then this might fitting be for you too.

You can fly into some of these resorts by seaplane, but it is more likely that you will take your own car or a rental car, if you want to get out and do some exploring further afield. Personally, I would rather hire a dinghy.

Would You Recognize The Symptoms Of Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is the result of a virus that is transferred from person to person with the bite of a tiger striped mosquito. Dengue typically begins with high fever, chills, headache, pain behind the eyes, and joint and muscle pain making the person look flushed with a rash appearing about three or four days after the onset of fever. The rash spreads to the rest of the body and shows up often as an inflammation of the lymph nodes.

Dengue, in its most common form has an incubation period of around |five to eight days from the start of fever. It is worth mentioning that a person has fever for around four to seven days and it is usual for most people to get well without any major difficulties. However, long term effects and complications cannot be entirely ruled out in all cases, with some taking numerous months to recover and some having fatal recurrences.

This arises especially in areas where dengue is endemic and there is the likelihood of repetitive infections and relapses. The most serious of effects or complications are dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS).

Dengue hemorrhagic fever known as Hemorrhagic dengue, Dengue shock syndrome, Philippine hemorrhagic fever, Thai hemorrhagic fever or Singapore hemorrhagic fever can result in dengue shock syndrome and is fatal in about 1/20 cases that have a re-infection.

The seriousness of the impact of dengue in the form of dengue hemorrhagic fever rests basically on one contracting another virus after building immunity to one particular type of virus. The risk factors rise with having antibodies to dengue virus from a prior infection, being younger than 12, female, or Caucasian.

Look out for the effects of dengue hemorrhagic fever in the individual being not merely restless and irritable, but also becoming sweaty and acquiring shock-like symptoms. Minute spots of blood and bleeding could occur on the skin with substantial patches below the skin and negligible injuries causing severe bleeding. Some of the early indications that might be noticed are decreased appetite, fever, headache, joint pain, malaise, muscle pain, and vomiting.

Then you could notice more acute indications like restlessness followed by skin discoloration caused by the flow of blood into the tissues from ruptured blood vessels in mucous membranes especially in the mouth. There could also be a sweeping rash followed by flat round spots caused by internal bleeding in the skin from the capillaries.

This dengue situation could worsen and show up as a shock-like state, cold clammy extremities, and sweatiness. A GP could examine the patient and find other indications like enlarged liver, reduced blood pressure, red eyes, swollen glands, and weak and rapid pulse.

The treatment might include a cure of the indications and a transfusion of fresh blood or platelets to right bleeding problems, IV fluids and electrolytes to right electrolyte imbalances and oxygen therapy for treating the unusually low blood oxygen level and hydration with intravenous (IV) fluids to treat dehydration. In addition, a stay in an intensive care environment is usually necessary.

It is imperative to approaching your medical professional in time during repeated attacks and to make sure of personal hygiene and cleanliness at home and its surrounds. Using fully-covering clothing, mosquito netting, mosquito repellent with DEET and avoiding travelling when mosquitoes are prevalent would help to control dengue.
