How Is The Operational Efficiency Of Your Domestic Appliances Influenced By A Hard Water Supply?

The majority of homes are fed with a domestic water supply which provides “hard water”. Hard water is simply a designation which is applied to water which has a relatively high level of dissolved minerals in it. The two most important minerals are calcium and magnesium. There is absolutely no health risk associated with hard water – but it can have an impact on both the efficiency and lifespan of domestic appliances.

As a consequence of hard water, mineral deposits can be laid down in water pipes and a range of household appliances. Household appliances which use hot or boiling water are especially at risk as heating the water frees the minerals it contains which then solidify as “scale”. Coffee makers, kettles, steam irons, dishwashers and washing machines are all prone to this effect – as are household central heating systems and boilers.

A number of different variables have an influence upon how much scale is generated. One of the strongest influences is the temperature of the water. The higher the water temperature, the greater the amount of mineral deposits that will be freed and the more scale that will form. Lowering the operating temperature of household heating systems, dishwashers and washing machines will tend to reduce the amount of deposited scale and will ensure that these appliances operate more efficiently and have an extended lifespan. Choosing a detergent that includes anti-scaling agents can also help.

Of course, some appliances such as kettles and irons need to be used at high temperature. Some kettles are available with filters these days, which can prevent some of the minerals getting into the sensitive heating elements. Many irons now come with special anti-scaling traps which collect the scale deposits and allow it to be cleaned by simply flushing it under running water. Other alternatives include cleaning or flushing through using special anti-scale chemicals.

There may be no health problems as a result of a hard water supply, but some people will dislike the flavour of hot drinks and food prepared using this. In this case, a water filter could be used. Various types exist, ranging from simple jug type filters to on tap, under sink and even whole house filters. They are all effective, cheaper than you might imagine and relatively quick to install.

Whilst it may seem like a bit of an inconvenience, it’s well worth taking a little effort to combat the effects of a hard water supply. Apart from improved efficiency of domestic appliances, using the right detergents, operating at a lower water temperature and occasional cleaning will save you money and extend the life of your household goods.

A Short Guide To Choosing The Correct Ironing Board

There’s not much doubt that an ironing board is a dull and mundane item of household equipment to which very few people give much consideration. Nevertheless, every home will have one. It is an essential household item and – if you pick the wrong type – you could well finish up with poorly ironed clothes, take longer to get through your ironing than you need to and even strain your back.

Most people today use steam irons – or even steam generator irons, which are becoming ever more popular. In this case you definitely want to get an ironing board which has a mesh construction. This allows the steam to pass through the fabric of the garment being ironed, through the cover of the ironing board and through the top of the board itself. It helps to prevent the ironing board cover becoming soggy due to condensation after a few garments have been ironed.

Ironing will be easier if the cover of the board is smooth. It should be secure and with no tendency to slip or move whilst pressing your garments. A cover which is elasticated around the edges, possibly with a couple of cross ties under the bottom surface of the board, will be unlikely to move around on you when you’re ironing. Choosing a metalised cover will mean that some of the iron’s heat is reflected. This will help to smooth the underside of the garment whilst you are passing the iron over the top surface and may reduce ironing time.

The size and shape of the board that you select will depend, to a large extent, on the type of things that you usually iron. Whilst a smaller board may be easier to store and work around, it will normally mean that the garment being ironed needs to be repositioned more frequently. Ironing the shoulders of shirts and blouses will be easier if there is a marked taper on the “pointy” end of the board.

Height adjustable scissor action legs are pretty standard these days. Make sure the range of height adjustment is suitable for you and set the board at a height which doesn’t cause you any pain or discomfort in your back, neck or shoulders. If you prefer to iron sitting down (many people do) then it’s a good idea to choose a board which has curved legs. That way your knees won’t bump against the legs when you’re seated. A broad T-piece type of foot, or splayed feet with a connecting bar, will provide a good solid platform for you to iron on.

The support for the iron itself should be sturdy enough to take the weight of the iron. Wire type extension platforms are usually okay for standard steam irons. The extra weight presented by a steam generator iron may mean that a longer board which just features a heat resistant plate on a slightly extended surface is better. Alternatively, the base unit of steam generator irons may be positioned on the floor – as long as the connecting hose between base unit and iron is long enough to permit this.

Ironing is a thankless task at best. Cut it down to size with a Tefal steam generator iron – you’ll be astonished at just how much time you can save.

Hybrid Electric Engines: Some Information

Have you ever asked yourself about hybrid cars? They certainly look stylish and modern, but what is it about them that makes them so different and so extraordinary? After all, most cars look the same these days, do they not? They are all designed by computer to be aerodynamic and aerodynamic is aerodynamic, so they all end up looking indistinguishable to anyone who is not an aficionado.

Well, the fact is that the difference between a hybrid car and a standard car lies under the bonnet. There are different kinds of hybrid vehicles as well, but the most widespread kind has a hybrid electric engine. Therefore, you could say that what makes hybrid cars special from most other, ordinary cars is their engine.

Or engines really, because hybrid electric cars basically have two engines. One, the internal combustion engine, runs on petrol, LPG or diesel and the other, the electric motor, runs off electricity stored in an array of powerful batteries. On the other hand, ordinary cars only have an internal combustion engine. It is a good idea to examine these two types of engine separately.

First of all the electric motor. Electrical energy is created by several components on the car and stored in a large bank or array of powerful batteries. The electricity is generated by the turning of the internal combustion engine, just as with a normal car, when it is in use, but also by the wheels or / and the car’s braking system. Different models have different techniques of creating this electricity, but they are all very hi-tech and very effective.

When the car’s internal computers determine that the car no longer needs the strength of the internal combustion engine, it will turn it off and switch to the electric motor instead. The circumstances where this might happen are, for example, when you are driving slowly in inner-city traffic, when you are cruising at moderate speed on a flat road or when you are going down hill. This saves a significant amount of fuel, which is clearly a great saving to you.

However, there are occasions when you need more power than the batteries can supply you, for instance, when accelerating hard, when overtaking or when climbing a hill. At times such as these, the electric motor will shut down and the combustion engine will take over and start supplying power to the accelerator and electricity to the batteries. When the requirement for extra power has ceased, the batteries will take over again.

These choices are all taken by the hybrid electric vehicle’s (HEV’s) on board computer system and you will not be aware of much other that a surge of power or a quietening of the propulsion system. This works very well in most scenarios, but some drivers of HEV’s would like to have a manual override for abnormal circumstances, such as an undulating terrain.

All in all, cars with hybrid electric engines work very well at reducing fuel bills but they are still too dear to be much more than a gimmicky toy and a salve to the conscience for the rich.

E-Book Reader Prices Down In Response To The Apple IPad Launch

The Amazon Kindle reader has been instrumental in the development of the e-book reader and e-book market. The original Kindle launched in November of 2007. The Kindle 2.0 was released in February of 2009 and the large format Kindle DX followed in the summer of the same year.

The Kindle readers dominated the market and took a 60% share of all e-book reader sales in the USA. The Sony reader, which was actually launched in 2006 before the Kindle, followed in second place with a share of around 35%. Other companies saw the potential of the e-book reader market and launched or updated their own readers to get a slice of the pie.

Manufacturers like Bookeen, Plastic Logic, Sony and Barnes and Noble worked hard to get their share of the rapidly developing market, but the dominance of the Kindle seemed pretty well established, if not unassailable. It was only when Apple launched their iPad that the Kindle faced any credible competition – despite the fact that the two devices were very different and, you would think, aimed at different target markets.

Since the launch of the iPad, e-book reader prices have fallen quite some way. The Kindle 2.0 is currently selling for just $ 189, a huge reduction over the $ 359 launch price of February 2009. The large format Kindle DX has been upgraded, being fitted with a new improved screen, and has had a price reduction from $ 489 to just $ 379. Barnes and Noble have also dropped the price of their Nook reader from $ 259 to $ 199.

Although the iPad seems to have provoked a round of price cuts among the manufacturers of e-books, the same cannot be said about the price of the e-books to read on these devices. Prior to the launch of the iPad, Apple had negotiated a deal with the major publishing houses which let them set the price of their e-book editions at pretty much whatever they wanted – as long as they did not allow the same e-book to be offered cheaper on any other platform. This was seen as good news by the publishers, who had been unhappy with Amazon’s policy of selling all e-books for $ 9.99 or less.

Although Amazon had to modify their approach, it wasn’t all bad news for them – or for Barnes and Noble either. Amazon had always given the impression that they were much more interested in book sales – and e-book sales – than they were in hardware sales. How else to explain the fact that they had bent over backwards to make it possible to read Kindle books on such a wide variety of different devices? It’s possible to read Kindle books on the PC, the Mac, the iPod Touch, the iPhone, the iPad, the Blackberry and any mobile device that runs Android. The latest price movements mean that Amazon, and other companies such as Barnes and Noble – and now Apple – who have a significant stake not just in the sale of hardware but also in the sale of e-books, can adopt a policy of selling the hardware cheap and making their profit in the sale of e-books over the life of the reading device.

This trend may tend to favor companies which have a foot in both the book and hardware sales camps. Considering the current number of devices which can be used to read Kindle books, it looks as if Amazon will be a major player in the future of digital publishing for some time to come.

Kindle Books – The Future Of Publishing

Since its November 2007 launch, the Amazon Kindle reader has been a great product for the company. The strong association that Amazon has with both books and electronics makes it the perfect product for their business model. After the release of the upgraded Kindle 2.0 in February of 2009, followed by the release of the large display Kindle DX model in the summer of the same year, the Kindle went on to become Amazon’s best selling product.

The Kindle became Amazon’s most gifted item ever over the 2009 festive season – and, on Christmas day of the same year, Kindle book downloads outnumbered orders for physical books for the first time ever. This was probably due to those people who were lucky enough to receive a Kindle as a gift trying it out – and a lot of the downloads would have been free – but it was still a landmark event for both Amazon and the Kindle.

Despite the huge success of the Kindle reader, there were times when Amazon appeared to be a somewhat reluctant manufacturer. They went to a great deal of trouble to make sure that Kindle books could be read on a wide variety of different devices by people who didn’t own Kindles. Currently there are free Kindle “Apps” for the PC, the Mac, the iPod Touch, the iPhone, the new iPad, the Blackberry and any device running Android. At times, Amazon looked to be in competition with itself.

However, the reasoning behind Amazon’s open policy became clear with the release of the Apple iPad. Among its many features, the iPad can be used to read e-books, and the price of e-book readers went into free fall as Apple enthusiasts rushed to get their hands on Apple’s new device. However, even as e-book reader prices were plummeting, the average price of the e-books for use with them was climbing.

This was chiefly due to a deal struck between Apple and the major publishing houses. Apple agreed to let publishers set the price for their e-book editions at whatever level they liked, as long as they didn’t offer the e-book at a lower price on any other reader. Amazon’s policy of selling all e-books for $ 9.99 or less was in tatters. At first glance it looked as if the iPad was to be Amazon’s nemesis, both in terms of Kindle reader hardware and e-book sales.

However, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that Amazon’s policy of releasing free Kindle Apps for just about every device known to man was a master stroke. Each App is nothing more than an outlet for Kindle books and, given that the price of these is increasing, Amazon can now afford to drop the price3 of their Kindle reader hardware secure in the knowledge that they will make a profit from the sale of e-books over the lifetime of the reader. For that matter, even if the iPad – or any other reader – seriously dented the sale of Kindle readers, Amazon would continue to sell their Kindle books.

Lower Prices For Kindle Readers Are Good News For Consumers

The Amazon Kindle reader seemed to be the perfect product for Amazon. It totally dominated the e-book reader market, accounting for 60% of all e-book reader sales, and it was hard to see where the competition was coming from. There were many predictions of a “Kindle killer”, but despite the release of new readers by the likes of Sony, Barnes and Noble, Plastic Logic and Bookeen, the Kindle looked set to hold on to its number one position.

The release of Apple’s iPad did look like it would put a bit of a damper on things for Amazon. Even although it is an entirely different type of gadget, the very fact that it could be used to read e-books was enough to convince many that it sounded the death knell for the Kindle. As pointed out by many industry watchers, whilst not without flaws of its own, the iPad was so eagerly snapped up by Apple adherents that it could hardly fail to have some impact on Kindle sales figures.

As well as releasing new, sexy hardware, Apple also struck a deal with many of the major publishers which let them charge whatever they wanted for e-books – as long as they weren’t offered for less on any other device – the Kindle in other words. This looked set to put a bit of a spanner in the works of Amazon’s policy of providing e-books for $ 9.99 or less. It certainly seems as if the price of e-books has been creeping upwards since the launch of the iPad. It does seem a little strange that increased competition should drive prices upwards – but there you have it.

It’s a different story with the actual e-book reader hardware however. Barnes and Noble have dropped the price of their Nook reader from $ 259 to $ 199. Amazon have now dropped the price of the Kindle 2.0 from $259 to $189 – a very low number considering that it retailed at $ 359 when it was launched in February of 2009. The price of the larger format Kindle DX has also been reduced from $ 489 to $ 379, an event which coincides with the device’s first upgrade which includes a higher contrast screen and a new body color.

The freshly updated Kindle DX is now more than $ 100 cheaper than the entry level iPad – and it requires no monthly payment to connect to the internet, unlike the iPad. Many people will be happy to pay more for the iPad of course, as it is a more powerful and versatile device.

It will be interesting to see whether this downward price movement of e-book readers is simply a temporary reaction to the iPad or whether it heralds the dawn of a new pricing policy. It could be that companies like Amazon and Barnes and Noble might take advantage of the trend for higher priced e-books by offering lower priced hardware secure in the knowledge that they will make their profit throughout the life of the device. Or it may simply be a stalling tactic until the next generation color Kindle hits the streets later this year.
