The same as all new hobbies, mountain biking can get fairly confusing for the novice, especially if you have never bought a bike before. However, when you have the bike you might want to buy some accessories in order to increase your biking experience. This is another minefield for the novice.
The first items to buy are those that will increase your safety, your comfort and your enjoyment. Not all the accessories are expensive and most of them are fairly obvious, but here is a list of the most essential accessories for the beginner mountain bike rider.
Crash Helmet: the biking crash helmet is not the same as a motorbike crash helmet, because the speeds concerned are not as high. However, a tumble at 15-20 MPH can still get quite significant and even fatal.
Most of the significant biking injuries are head injuries. The bikers’ crash helmet is the same as is worn by Olympic riders and competitors in the Tour de France, so they are up to the job. Do not fail to buy a helmet of good quality or you may just as well not bother.
Riding Gloves: no matter what weather you cycle in, gloves are practical. If the weather is hot, the gloves will absorb your perspiration and help you maintain a decent grip on the handlebars. If the weather is cold, they will protect you from the cold and keep some feeling in your fingers.
Not just that, but it is normal to put your hands out in case of a fall, so the hands are frequently scraped and fingers can get broken. Good mountain bike gloves will go a long way to safeguarding you from these frequent accidents.
Cycling Shorts: these are not absolutely crucial, but they will absorb perspiration and protect you if you come off your bike. It depends on the weather and how much you want to exercise yourself really. In colder weather, you may prefer to wear a track suit, whereas you could wear the shorts in the summer.
Cycling Shoes: these again are not absolutely vital, but cycling shoes are more comfortable for cyclists than general trainers. The grips on pedals may be quite rough, so you will need shoes with a harder sole than normal so that you do not feel the grip dig into you.
The toe part should be toughened as well, because cyclists often scrape the toes of their shoes whilst kicking off and crashing. You might want some ankle support too.
Eye Protection: if you are cycling at speed or on a narrow mountain trail, it can be disastrous to get a blinding flash or an insect in your eye. A flash of bright light off glass or a lake or a fly in the eye, can cause you to crash or come off the path and take a serious fall, which could be very serious if you are in a distant region.
Water Bottle: you will need to keep drinking water if you are exerting yourself. Stay hydrated so that you stay strong. You do not want to pass out or be forced to drink polluted river water.
Puncture Repair Kit: let’s face it, punctures happen and nuts wear loose, so it is important to have a repair kit and a few spanners so that you do not get caught out.
Mobile Phone: a mobile phone will get you out of trouble should the worst come to the worst.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania – The Battleground
If you are at all interested in either Pennsylvania or American history, you will certainly have heard of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and the historic activities that took place there during the American Civil War. The three day long battle that took place there in July 1863 was cruel and bloody, but was hailed as a victory for the Unionist North.
Even so, one quick look in the Union Army burial ground in the Gettysburg National Cemetery on Cemetery Hill will persuade you that the victory came at a very high cost. The cost in human life and human suffering was gigantic on both sides. Later on in the same year, Abraham Lincoln gave a discourse which was to become famous throughout the world as the Gettysburg Address.
These days, the Gettysburg National Military Park is a tranquil place, but it serves as a moving reminder of the battle that was fought, the strategies employed, the heroism of the combatants and the willingness of military leaders to sacrifice the common soldier for political objectives.
If you go to the Gettysburg National Military Park, you would do well to begin your tour in the visitors’ centre. There you will be able to pick up books, pamphlets and leaflets to help you orient yourself when you are on the battleground, even if you are familiar with how and where the genuine battle was fought.
If you think that it would be too much for you to work things out for yourself or if you do not have much time, you could join one of the regular guided tours. If you are somewhere in between these two positions, you could first watch a film in the Cycloarma Center, where there are also historical items recovered from the battleground on the numerous excavations that have taken place over the nearly 150 years since the battle at Gettysburg took place. If you do not look around the museum before you go on to the battleground, you ought to look later.
If you are going to Gettysburg to enlighten your children about that most important era of American history, you should first check out the special interest programmes available to 7-12 year olds in the warmer summer months. One programme allows children to enlist in the army of 1863 for an hour in order to get a sense for what it was like for soldiers of the day and what it was like for the children that helped them go into battle.
Another programme consists of a story-teller telling stories of what it was like to be a youngster in the days of the Civil War and the role that kids played both in the war and in civilian life back then.
Gettysburg is a spellbinding place to go to whether your family was embroiled in the battle there or not. Many of the combatants’ names and place names like Devil’s Den and Cemetery Hill will already be familiar to you and a visit to the Gettysburg National Military Park will bring them back to life for you.
