Stay-cationing is all the rage and has been so for the last two or three years. It is a terrific concept for those people with kids in school with their soccer practice, scouting activities, ballet recitals and so forth. It is also a fine idea for the financially strapped who can afford the time off but not the expense of traveling. This is the only option for many in today’s economy and probably that’s where stay-cationing got its start – from debt-ridden families on unemployment insurance.
If you are one of the many people who earn a living from their home office, stay-cationing is not all that appealing an option.
What Exactly is a Stay-cation anyway?
New, hip lingo not your thing? Let’s talk about the meaning of a stay-cation. Simply put, a stay-cation is a vacation where you decide to stay at home instead of hopping the first train out of town. There are any number of reasons you might decide to take a stay-cation rather than cruising to some pleasure destination.
If you live in an area with a wide variety of entertainment options you don’t get to take advantage of very often, a stay-cation might be just as good and half as expensive as taking off, since you can still get out and do things without having to pay for a hotel or the exorbitant price of eating out. When we lived near Washington D.C. it wasn’t at all unusual for us to decide to take a stay-cation and cruise the city, since there was so much going on that we didn’t often get to see.
Another good reason to stay-cation is lack of funds. Transportation, hotels, food and drink all add up to real money very quickly. If you are barely making it anyway, like so many people today, a vacation in that exotic land is just not a realistic get away place.
Why is Stay-cationing not an Option for the Home-based Worker?
You’ve got the 411 on the stay-cation. There are some definite arguments in favor of it. You get more R&R than you will if you travel. You can finally get around to tackling all those home improvement projects you’ve been putting off forever and a year.
You may have the best intentions of never logging onto your computer during your stay-cation, but you know something will always come up and there you are in front of your lap top working away as usual. Maybe a client calls and you say sorry, I’m out of town I’ll deal with this problem when I return. Yeah, right. What you feel is morally obligated to help out your client right now, today.
Then, while you’re there, you’ll stop by to tweak this. Read that. Someone will have a rush project they want you to do on your vacation, since that’s how it always works. You’ll promise yourself you’ll just take an hour or a day or two, to deal with that. The next thing you know, your vacation’s gone by, and you didn’t get to enjoy any of it.
So, for those of you who Work from Home…
…take a real vacation. Get out of town and visit an old friend leaving all remnants of work (and your lap top) at home. This is the only way you will actually take some vacation time and enjoy the refreshing break without working at anything you normally do.
